Last week was a very busy week at Cherokee ISD both academically and athletically. Our high school competed the district UIL academic meet and performed well.

In Ready Writing, Raelyn West placed 2nd, and Skyla Shannon placed 4th.

In News Writing, Gracie Perry placed 1st, Abigail Anderson placed 2nd, and Yaneiry Vega placed 3rd.

In Editorial Writing, Kora Berrio placed 3rd, Kathy Shannon placed 4th, and Yaneiry Vega placed 5th. In Headline Writing, Skyla Shannon placed 3rd and Skylar Harris placed 5th.

In Feature Writing, Kendall Johnson placed 1st, Brissa Baugh placed 2nd, and Chloe Berrio placed 5th.

In Copy Editing, Abigail Medrano placed 2nd, Raelyn West placed 4th, and Allie Berrio placed 5th.

In Current Events, Curtis Parker placed 1st, Kendall Johnson placed 2nd, and Abigail Medrano placed 5th.

In Prose Interpretation, Chloe Berrio placed 1st, a Cherokee student placed 2nd, and Maycie Shanklin placed 4th.

In Poetry, Kendall Johnson placed 1st, Kathy Shannon placed 2nd, and Abigail Anderson placed 4th.

Any student that placed in the top 3 of an event will advance to regionals.

At the high school boys’ district track meet, Eric Miller placed 3rd, and Gunner Baugh placed 4th in the 100 meter dash.

In the 110 hurdles, Tristian Arkansas placed 1st, Isaac Graves placed 2nd, and Gunner Baugh placed 4th. Joey Bond placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash. Gunner Baugh placed 3rd in the 300 hurdles. James Beck placed 2nd in the mile run.

In the 3220 meter run, James Beck placed 1st, and Kase Bordner placed 3rd. Cherokee’s sprint relay team placed 3rd. Runners were Joey Bond, Gabe Morris, Eric Miller, and Tristan Arkansas. The 800 meter relay team placed 2nd. Runners were Joey Bond, Gabe Morris, Eric Miller, and Tristan Arkansas.

The mile relay team placed 4th. Runners were Brady Johnson, Deaveon Miller, Isaac Graves, and James Beck. In the discus, Joey Bond placed 1st, and Weston Stiefel placed 3rd. In the shot put, Joey Bond placed 1st, and Weston Stiefel placed 2nd. Gunner Baugh placed 1st in the high jump.

To summarize the season thus far, Coach Berrio says, “The goal all year was to win the district track meet, and with the largest number of male participants the CHS boys have had in many years...the High school Boys won the District track meet! Thank you Tristian Arkansas, Gabe Morris, Weston Stiefel, Eric Miller, Isaac Graves, Joey Bond, Matt Gass, Kase Bordner, Rode Ligon, James Beck, Gunner Baugh, Deaveon Miller, and Brady Johnson for being an Indian and competing to the best of your abilities.”

At the high school girls’ district track meet, Raelyn West placed 1st in the 100 meter dash with Brissa Baugh coming in 2nd. Skyla Shannon placed 2nd in the 110 hurdles.

In the 200 meter dash, Sydnie Bond placed 1st, Allie Berrio placed 3rd, and Payton Duggan placed 4th.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Sydnie Bond placed 1st. In the 400 meter dash, Skylar Harris placed 2nd with another Cherokee Indian coming in 3rd.

Our Cherokee relay teams made a clean sweep, winning all three relay races. Members of the sprint relay team are Brissa Baugh, Sydnie Bond, Allie Berrio, and Raelyn West. Members of the 800 meter relay team are Skylar Harris, Allie Berrio, Brissa Baugh, and Raelyn West. Our mile relay runners are Maycie Shanklin, a Cherokee Indian, Laci Wagner, and Payton Duggan.

In discus, Abigail Medrano placed 1st. She also won the shot put event. Maycie Shanklin placed 2nd in pole vault. Brissa Baugh won the high jump.

In triple jump, Sydnie Bond placed 1st, Brissa Baugh placed 2nd, and Skylar Harris placed 3rd. The varsity girls won the district meet as well!

Our JV girls’ team also competed. Kandy McCoy placed 1st in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the 400 meter dash. Abigail Anderson placed 1st in the shot put and the discus. We are so proud of all of these athletes!
