Defense wins championships. That was definitely the case on January 12 as the Lady Dillos were able to capture an extremely hard-fought 31-30 victory over the visiting Mason Cowgirls.

The Lady Dillos, who trailed by five points early in the third quarter and by four points midway through the fourth quarter, overcame a very rough shooting night from the field by playing outstanding team defense and made a reliable 16-of-20 freethrow attempts.

Down the stretch, San Saba was able to jump out to a 31-27 lead late but saw it collapse to just 31-30 after some very costly turnovers.

However, the Lady Dillos forced a turnover on the game’s final possession with clutch defense as San Saba held on for the victory.

Despite the tough shooting night, the Lady Dillos made very timely baskets on offense as senior Brighton Adams led the way with eight points, while clutch free-throw shooting from junior Landri Glover (seven points on 7-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line) and senior Courtnee Cash (six points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line) made a massive difference in the game’s outcome.

The No. 3 Lady Dillos (a perfect 18-0 overall and 7-0 in district play) will have games this week at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, on the road at Johnson City High School and will be back home at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 22, to host Harper High School.

After the Dillos cruised to a 60-25 victory over winless Mason on Tuesday night, the San Saba boys varsity basketball squad also stayed perfect in district play when they pulled away down the stretch to a 51-33 win over rival Goldthwaite.

The Dillos were led with a balanced attack on offense by junior Reagan Mejia with a teamhigh 13 points, while the likes of senior Logan Glover and Risien Shahan added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Despite being ahead only 20-16 by halftime, the Dillos really put their foot on the gas offensively in the third quarter as San Saba saw its lead grow to 41-29 by the end of the third quarter.

San Saba kept the visiting Eagles at bay the rest of the way to secure an impressive 18-point victory that featured them playing fantastic team defense from start to finish.

The Dillos (11-3 overall and 5-0 in district play) will have games this week at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, on the road at Johnson City High School and will be back home at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, January 22, to host Harper High School.
