The San Saba Armadillos opened their football season with a solid showing in a scrimmage against the Brady Bulldogs on Friday night, at Rogan Field. Both the JV and Varsity squads took the field and tested themselves against one of the area’s top Class 3A programs.
The Armadillo JV set the tone early, driving the ball effectively while also making several key defensive stops to hold off the Bulldogs. Their consistency on both sides of the ball highlighted the depth and discipline of the underclassmen roster.
The Varsity squad followed with a commanding performance. Despite facing Brady’s quick and aggressive defense, the Armadillos were able to move the ball and sustain drives. Defensively, San Saba gave up just one score all evening, showing grit against a very big and strong Bulldog offense. A highlight of the night came when Brandon Gonzales stepped in front of a pass and handed the Bulldogs a turnover in the form of an interception.
Head Football Coach Andreas Aguirre praised the effort, noting that both units showed promise while identifying areas to sharpen before the regular season.
The Armadillos will now turn their attention to the road, as both the JV and Varsity squads travel to face the Sonora Broncos on Thursday, August 21.
