Dillos Baseball thrashes Junction for 10th Win

The San Saba High School varsity baseball team split a pair of District 29-2A games over the past week as the Dillos traveled to take on Mason High School and Junction High School.

San Saba Dillos 5, Mason Punchers 14

On April 20 on the road against a very good Mason team, San Saba got off to a great start and held its own for most of the contest. The Dillo offense got going in a hurry in the top of the first inning. After Wesley Lackey was able to score on a wild pitch, Weston Oliver absolutely crushed a two-run home run over the left-field wall as San Saba was out to a 3-0 lead with nobody out.

Although the Punchers were able to score a pair of runs over the next two innings to cut into the deficit, the Dillos doubled the lead in the top of the third inning when Winton Lackey came up to the plate with an RBI single that drove in Hayden Reeves to make it 4-2 in favor of San Saba.

Following a two-run inning from Mason to tie the game, San Saba retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Reagan Mejia stole home with two outs to put the Dillos up 5-4.

Unfortunately for San Saba, that was all the offense the team could muster the rest of the night as Mason’s offense came to life in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Punchers erupting for a whopping nine runs in the frame to put the game out of reach.

Reeves finished the game with three hits on the evening for the Dillos, while Wesley Lackey and Oliver each had two hits apiece.

San Saba Dillos 19, Junction Eagles 0

The Dillos bounced back on Friday, April 22, from Wednesday’s rough loss to Mason as San Saba remained on the road and pounded a lowly Junction team 19-0.

From the very start, the Dillos were in complete control against the Eagles as San Saba scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, four runs in the second, three runs in the third, and five more runs in the fourth frame in the shutout which ended early due to the mercy rule.

As a team, San Saba had a whopping 18 hits and was led by an outstanding game from Lane King as he drove in a game-high six runs, had two doubles, and one home run. Tyler Johnson and two hits and three runs batted in, Drake Bryant had a team-high four hits and two RBIs, and Jaxzen Mask had two hits and drove in a pair of runs of his own.

On the mound, Oliver was unstoppable as he struck out 12 Eagle batters over 5.0 innings pitched with zero hits allowed, two walks, and one hit batter.

Up next, following the annual Senior Night game at home on April 26 vs. Harper High School, the Dillos will head to the playoffs as either the third or fourth seed in District 29-2A. San Saba enters Tuesday night’s game with a solid 10-9 overall record with a 5-4 mark in district play.
