A dramatic fourth-quarter battle at Rogan Field ended in heartbreak for the San Saba Armadillos Friday night, as they fell to the Thorndale Bulldogs, 28-24, in a game defined by explosive plays, defensive grit, and late-game heroics.
The loss drops the Armadillos to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in district play, while the Bulldogs improve their position with a hard-fought road win.
Both teams opened the night with stingy defense, keeping the scoreboard clean through the first quarter. Defensive pressure from both sides kept offenses from finding any early rhythm, as standout tackles and smart coverage defined the opening minutes.
Thorndale broke the deadlock early in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful extra point. San Saba responded with a promising drive, but a costly fumble gave the Bulldogs another opportunity before the half. The Armadillo defense, however, stood tall and kept the score at 7-0 heading into halftime.
San Saba's offense came alive in the second half, sparked by a series of powerful runs by Jason Everett. That momentum culminated in a 73-yard touchdown burst by Luke Tharp. Brandon Gonzales' extra point tied the game at 7-7, igniting the home crowd.
The Bulldogs quickly answered with a 62-yard touchdown strike through the air, reclaiming the lead at 14-7.
Beginning the fourth quarter, the Armadillos clawed back with a 26-yard field goal by Gonzales, cutting the deficit to 14-10. Moments later, Everett broke loose for a 73-yard touchdown run, giving San Saba its first lead of the night at 17-14 after another Gonzales extra point.
But the fireworks continued. Thorndale answered again with a 67- yard touchdown pass, swinging the lead back to the Bulldogs, 21-17. San Saba refused to go quietly, as Tharp scampered 24 yards into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night. Another Gonzales kick put the Dillos ahead 24-21 with time winding down.
With just one minute remaining, the Bulldogs executed one final drive, capping it with a 27-yard touchdown pass. The successful extra point put Thorndale ahead 28-24.
San Saba had one last opportunity, but a deep pass attempt was intercepted, sealing the win for the visiting Bulldogs.
