This past weekend turned out to be a very good one for San Saba County area football teams as the San Saba High School Armadillos, Richland Springs High School Coyotes, and Cherokee High School Indians all picked up crucial victories in the first round of their respective playoff brackets.

San Saba 31, Forsan 17

For a team that has had all sorts of adversity thrown its way this month with COVID-19 and injuries, the San Saba Dillos’ varsity football squad showed resilience and held its own enroute to a solid 31-17 win in the first round of the 2A-1 playoffs against the Forsan High School Buffaloes.

Dillos’ senior standout Justin Yarborough, who was inactive for the previous game vs. Cisco High School, returned to action against Forsan and made a massive impact on both sides of the ball with 10 carries for 76 yards with one touchdown run, as well as a game-high 19 tackles from his linebacker spot.

San Saba senior running back Stone Sears had two rushing touchdowns on the night, while senior wide receiver Logan Glover had three receptions for 107 yards in the victory, including a crucial six-yard touchdown reception on a pass thrown by Dillos’ senior quarterback Risien Shahan.

Fellow junior wide receiver Reagan Mejia also had tripledigit receiving yardage on the night with 114 yards on just two catches, while Shahan threw for 246 yards on 8-of-18 passing attempts, and junior Wesley Lackey rushed for a team-high 124 yards on 13 carries.

San Saba, who was ranked in the 2A-1 top-10 throughout the season before their crushing loss at home to Cisco, now faces the Panhandle High School Panthers at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 20th, in the second round at neutral site Henrietta High School.

Richland Springs 56, Blanket 30

Defending 6-Man 1A D2 Champion Richland Springs had not seen game action since back on October 23rd, but were able to get the job done on Friday, November 13th, as the Coyotes got the job done against the Blanket High School Tigers with a 56-30 win in the first round.

Still undefeated in 2020 at 9-0, the Coyotes will look to knock off a powerful 10-1 Oglesby High School Tigers team in the second round at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 20th, at neutral site Hico High School with a Region IV finals berth appearance at stake.

Cherokee 80, Brookesmith 30

For the second time in the span of one month, the Indians scored a whopping 80 points as Cherokee improved to 8-3 overall with a dominant 80-30 victory in the first round of the 6-Man 1A D2 playoffs over the Brookesmith High School Mustangs.

The Indians will have their hands very full this week at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 19th, as Cherokee will play the Calvert High School Trojans in the second round of the playoffs at neutral site Hamilton High School.
