100 Years Ago April 12, 1923

Prof. and Mrs. Burkett of the Bend school brought their winners over to the track meet. They not only were winners in the Bend school, but the majority of the entrants are going to the district meet next. That's right you little country friends, show these town kids that not everybody in the country is a clod-hopper only.

The first great social event in the life of Miss Helen Drew Hill took place when her grandmother extended her hospitality and celebrated her third birthday anniversary at her home. Many of the little friends gathered to wish Miss Helen Drew Hill many returns of the day.

Commissioner J. W. Smith informs us that quite a lot of the roads leading into San Saba were given attention the past week. The day set for the work on the Chappel road was kept and quite a number of the people worked the road on that day. The Cherokee road came in for a share of work. Some mud holes were filled in and the road dragged.

The Bend band came in during the track meet and played for the county school children. We surely did appreciate this of our Bend friends.

Homer DeWolfe left for Tulsa, Oklahoma where he will look for a location. Mr. DeWolfe is an able young man, who will make good most anywhere.

Misses John Leigh and Margaret Dailey of Richland Springs school spent the week end with their parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Dailey. Miss John Leigh has been reelected by the Richland Springs board of trustees.

Miss Mary Carr is assisting in the millinery and dressmaking shop of Mrs. W. R. Chalk. This popular establishment has had such an increase in business that several experienced hands had to be added to the force.

60 Years Ago April 15, 1963

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Moore, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Ed Moore, took a tour through the Kingsland and Buchanan Lake area.

Effort is being made to get Aged Homes, Inc., of Fort Worth to locate a Rest Home here, according to information from the office of the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce. Aged Homes, Inc., has agreed to build a $50,000 Rest Home with 30 beds within one year. The home would employ about 11 persons and would add approximately $30,000 to the economy of the county, Harry Shapiro, chairman of the chamber committee, announced.

Principal Joe Burchard announced this week that he had received the delayed reports on the Ready Writing events of the Interscholastic Literary meet held at Mason. Karen Townsend was a third place winner in the high school ready writing. In the elementary ready writing, Paula Murphy won first place and Elaine Jones placed fourth in the contest.

Patricia Renfro, a student at SWTSC, San Marcos, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Edwards, during the Easter holidays.

The Richland Springs FFA Chapter won third place in the Poultry Judging Contest in the Area VII FFA Judging Contest held at Tarleton State College. The sponsor and team members are R. J. Powell, VA teacher, Gregory Gober, Billy Harlow and Gene Wood. The team qualified for the State Contest.
