60 Years Ago February 14, 1963
Viron Payne, with the Missile System Div. of Redstone Arsenal at Huntsville, Ala., flew to San Saba in his private plane for a weekend visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Payne. He left for Dallas where he attended a business conference.
Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Almaguer are the parents of Norma, seven pounds and eight ounces, Feb. 8. Mr. and Mrs. Abel Paredez are the parents of Juan Jose, six pounds and eight ounces, born Feb. 7.
Buddy Ray Priest, a senior in San Saba High School, expected to sign a contract this week for a four-year Southwest Conference scholarship at the University of Texas.
Although the snow covered the ground very little moisture was received from the snowfall. L. C. Ward measured only .18 here in the city of San Saba. Geo. Walker at Algerita reported .25 and the report from Bend Store was .10. W. R. Bailey at Cherokee measured only .05. These reports were about average over the county.
Miss Mary Bearden and Johnny Kirk Edmondson, sophomore candidates, were crowned queen and king of hearts respectively at the annual San Saba High School Valentine Dance.
Alvie Smith was in Dallas where he attended the 11th annual Texas Drive-In Theatre Owner's convention held at the Statler-Hilton Hotel. Lt. Governor Preston Smith was one of the speakers for the meeting.
Mrs. Katie Lee Palmer expects to leave within a few days for her home in Sparta, Wis. after a visit with her mother, Mrs. George A. Gaines, following the funeral services held here last week for her father, George Gaines.
The San Saba fire department was called out to a fire on the Cye Terry ranch. The damage was light. Had this fire gone into cedar brake it could have burned hundreds of acres of good cedar.
50 Years Ago February 15, 1973 Effective Feb. 1, Algerita was no longer a rural postal station. Persons, who had been receiving mail, addressed to Algerita, at the Algerita Store, Post Office, will now have the mail delivered on Rural Route1, San Saba.
Brady Bulldogs took revenge over the Dillos here and defeated the varsity Dillos, 68-62; but the B Dillos defeated Brady, 66-53. The 9th Grade Bulldogs defeated the Dillo 9th, 47-23.
The County and City are waiting for the ground to dry enough to begin construction of the new airport north of town, according to information received from Penny Johnson, who has been named work supervisor of the project.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wiley visited recently in Fort Worth with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hail. They all went to Love Field where they met Sp-5 Joe Wiley, who had returned from a tour of duty in Germany. He has now been separated from the military service.
The Women's Missionary Union of First Baptist Church sponsored a fellowship and reception honoring Bro. and Mrs. Manuel Rios and family. Bro. Rios is pastor of Calvary Baptist Mission and his congregation joined in evening worship services at First Baptist Church.
Robbie Broyles took champion honors with his Charolais steer at the San Antonio Livestock Show. A representative of the Charolais Association presented Broyles with a trophy. Heston McBride of Llano is the breeder of the champion steer.
The third severe winter storm struck this area Feb. 8 when it began sleeting early in the morning, then snow began to fall and continued into the night four to five inches in depth. The first severe winter spell came the weekend of Dec. 10, when icy conditions closed schools for 2 days. The worst winter storm came Jan. 11 and 12, when the snow was measured from three to four inches in depth and the temperature dropped to zero and below in places on the morning of Jan. 12.
