As of July 2021, Texas’ population has surpassed 30 million after years of steady growth. In the past 18 months, the population has increased by 470,000 with roughly half of that growth due to people moving from other states and a quarter from international migration.
The population increase may have changed Texas demographics. An unofficial estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that people of color have pushed the growth. Hispanic Texans may now be the largest demographic at 40.2% of the population. Non-Hispanic white Texans are now the second-largest demographic at 39.4%.
The new milestone makes Texas the only state besides California with a population greater than 30 million.
