San Saba opened the 2022 season last Friday evening with a convincing 46-14 win over the Florence Buffaloes. The game-time conditions were typical of an August night at The Graveyard: hot, humid, and not an ounce of air could be felt throughout the game. By the time the game clock ran out in the 4th quarter, Florence fans had had enough of the mosquitoes and Tyler Johnson. The senior had a monster night accounting for seven total touchdowns (two kick returns, three rushing and two receiving). Johnson ended the evening with nine rushes for 77 yards (8.5 avg.), two rushing TDs, three receptions for 37 yards ( 12.3 avg.), two receiving TD’s and two touchdowns coming way of kick returns (80 and 71 yards). Ethan Gonzales led the team in rushing (13 carries 112 yards 8.6 avg.) while sophomore Haiden Van Bibber had three carries for 39 yards (13-yard avg.), and Zurie Herrera chipped in with one carry for seven yards. Senior QB Lance Taylor was four out of five passing (80%) for 49 yards and two passing TD’s and carried the ball five times for 42 yards (8.4 avg.), and Junior Lane Miller contributed one reception for 12 yards.
On the defensive side, DE Dylan Ware dominated the day; the senior led the defense with 16 tackles (seven tackles for loss) and five sacks. Linebacker Zurie Herrera had 12 tackles (one tackle for a loss). Other defensive leaders where Sophomore Linebacker Winton Lackey (nine tackles, one sack) and Senior defensive lineman Jesus Betancourt had seven tackles.
