I did not know this when we first got married, but my wife liked to grow flowers and plants. She might grow vegetables in the little garden spot that I made for her or flowers in or out of the house. She would get seeds when we were in town shopping or from friends.
One thing I observed is that it takes a lot of tender loving care, time, patience and nurturing to grow plants successfully.
Watching my wife growing those plants reminds me of something in the Bible. Only by hearing God’s word are we able to know what to do, (Romans 10:17).
First, we must confess our sins to God, (1 John 1:9, John 5:24) and put our faith in what Jesus Christ did on the cross. Then, we are what the Bible calls, “born again.” Jesus commanded it, and if we do not, we will never be allowed into heaven, (John 1:12, 3:3 & 5, 3:14-16,).
I wished when we accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior we were fully mature Christians, but it does not work that way. It takes time, constant effort and nurturing. Hearing God’s word is like watering little plants, (Colossians 3:16) not just every now and then or once a week, but daily.
The early Christians met either daily at the church or in their homes for prayer, to study God’s word, for meals and fellowship, (Acts 2:46&47, Acts 17:11, Hebrews 3:12 & 13). See you in Church next Sunday.
