Our Fourth of July celebrations have snuck up on me. I am diligently working to finish the baby quilt I started at the ladies quilting retreat. I opted to hand finish the quilt, and it is very time consuming. If the committee doesn’t like it, I have a few other items they can pick. Donations for the auction are coming in from community members, and once again we can look forward to some quality auction items. Bring your appetite and your wallet; it’s going to be a fun time in the old town Saturday. Why not deck your truck or golf cart out and join the morning parade? Times may be a tough, but we are a blessed country and a wonderful community.
Russ and I struggled for three days to hang new light fixtures in the kitchen and dining room. We are just not as agile as we used to be. I goofed up on the ceiling, so I ended up having to paint the entire ceiling. I do like the finished product, but the effort it took has made my shoulders a little stiff. Now I can get ready to paint the doors and door frames. I believe I will take my time. I still haven’t realized I retired, so I’m rushing to get summer jobs done. I need to take a deep breath and slow my work schedule down a little. We old workhorses don’t know how to take it easy.
I went to check the plums and grapes in the pasture. There just hasn’t been enough rain so there won’t be a plum crop. And the grapes are pitiful. Perhaps they will swell a little if we get a good rain. The flowers in the pasture that came up after our last rains are sparse and dwarfed. Russ likes to blame the cows for eating the flowers, but they are barely finding grass to consume. Many ranchers are selling off stock so that they can maintain their breeding stock.
Hay is out there, but I suspect it is going to be expensive. Our current economy is causing grief in all areas of our daily lives.
I want to put in a plug for our local businesses. Please try to buy from our local vendors: Coyote General Store, Skelton’s Hardware, The Feedlot, Mann Glass, McKinnerney Real Estate, and Frank Pierce’s well service. Gas is so expensive that even if prices in town are higher, you will save on the drive. Support our vendors please.
My trip to Alaska is getting closer. I’m just a few weeks away.
This will be Russ’s first and probably only cruise. I hope and pray he will have a memorable journey. If my son, Scott, has anything to say about that, Russ will have many happy moments. This is also by way of a 50 anniversary trip. The whole family was supposed to go, but life got in the way for most of them.
I spoke with my 88-year-old sister-in-law, Wanda. Russ’s sister, Bobbie, has a roommate at the nursing home. This is not comfortable for Bobby, especially as her roommate is a young person with muscular dystrophy. I complain about my aches and pains, but when you see this sweet young lady suffering and bed-ridden before she is 30… I am blessed to be old and in reasonably good health.
Please remember our country in your prayers. The recent Supreme Court decisions tend to make people unhappy, but their job is simply to determine if something is constitutional. Abortion will now be put in the hands of the state governments, and the people will vote. Our borders and border agents need prayer and protection. Our land needs rain desperately. Be safe during the freedom celebrations; remember we have a burn ban. We have multiple cases of cancer and heart issues in several of our churches. Please pray for our sick and our shut-ins.
Have a blessed week.
