The Richland Springs Report

Once again, this community proved that we have a huge heart. Thanks to the Garcia family, a benefit fish fry was held on Sunday after church, and members of the community came to enjoy and donate for the Uvalde families. A biodegradable balloon launch followed the meal.

Thank you, Mondo, Paula, Lane, and Savannah, for your big hearts and willing hands. You are a blessing.

By the end of the week, my rain gauge had received just over three inches of life-saving rain. We are still short, but what a blessing. A few spots were hit with high winds; my old house was one of them. My roof is peeled back, and rain can get onto the wood. After reviewing my options, I have decided to sell the wood and build a smaller sewing room. I’ll spend time searching the web for buyers of old wood. Our house is over 100 years old.

Apparently, it is not wise to pay Social Security taxes and TRS contributions. According to our politicians, working 28 years for one group and 15 for the other means I cannot receive both pensions because that falls under the windfall Profits Act. So, my mighty $1,000 pension check must be reduced by 50%. It is the law, but I wish our politicians worked under the same provisions. No one ever said life is fair.

The t-ball team is looking for sponsors and reasonably priced sleeping quarters for their July trip to the state game. Their appeal is on Facebook if you would like to contribute or have reasonable housing available.

Hopefully, the STAAR scores will be in this week. It will help educators and administrators understand the depth of the learning gap caused by Covid shutdowns. I can assure you that our teachers worked diligently to reduce those gaps. We can only continue to work to remove that gap. Please keep your students studying over the summer.

Mrs. Kubin will be opening the library this summer to assist with reading goals. Mrs. Wyatt will be contacting parents of students who must retake STAAR tests.

James Hammett continues to improve his corner property. The fire destroyed majority of his building, but the remaining structure and land is looking good. He will be conducting business from the small office he is constructing. The water office is yet to be restored or demolished.

Sherry Winters has stepped down as President of the Preservation Society. She was not prepared for the opposition she received. That is a shame because she generated enthusiasm for the plans that she and her husband, Marlin, had in store for our small town. I guess some of us old folks don’t like change much. I hope she changes her mind. I, for one, will support her.

Wednesday night Kid’s Church is taking a short vacation this month of June. VBS kick off will be at the fourth of July shindig. Start getting your patriotic decorations out; the party is getting close!

We have multiple cancer patients needing prayers this week. The following need prayers: the Burkharts for Daddy Jack, the Faughts, Dallas Larreau, Tommy Skaggs, Patricia Phillips, Charlie Clayton, and Tiffany Carroll. Barry Fikes is recovering from his triple bypass. He is up and walking; praise the Lord. There are many more needing prayers.

Danny Phillips gave a praise report after getting a clear report from his doctor. Happy birthday to Gus Lewis. Keep praying for Ukraine, for our country and its economic woes, our politicians, and our town. Most of all pray for our precious troops and their families. Stay cool everyone; the heat is coming back.
