Copy Editing is one of five events categorized under the Journalism umbrella in UIL Academics (News, Feature, Editorial, Headline are the others).
It is a relatively new event that made its debut in 2019. The students have 15 minutes to answer objective questions, proofread sentences and edit a news brief for grammar, spelling, punctuation, AP format, and factual errors. Over 500 students competed in Copy Editing at District, Regional, and State this year in class 2A.
Last Friday, SSHS Senior Mia Kilman and Junior Madison Shahan competed in the State meet in Austin at the University of Texas campus. Mia won the Silver medal and Madison was 6th place. These girls are a vital part of our academic team and compete not only in this event but several other events. They are to be commended on their hard work and dedication! Congratulations to both of them.
