The Richland Springs Report

To many in the community, this month is the one before summer break.

To teacher and students, this is the month of mayhem… Mayhem. The Masonic dinner was an evening of focus on the seniors and retiring teachers. The senior roping was completed over the weekend. May 12th is the eighthgrade graduation luncheon at the First Baptist Church.

May 18th, the elementary kids head out for a field trip, while the sixth-grade students explore Enchanted Rock for a science field trip.

The senior luncheon, hosted by the First Baptist Church is on the May 19th; Mike Phelan will be the chef for the delicious steak dinners.

The Christian Church will be hosting the Baccalaureate ceremony on the 22nd at 6:00 p.m. May 23rd, members of the town churches will provide a delicious breakfast at my home to honor the teachers. It’s an early breakfast call (7:30-8:30 a.m.) this year since we have end of the year meetings to complete. I can assure you, the teachers genuinely enjoy this brief time of food and relaxation. This is not the end of the activities, but Mrs. Wyatt will send out calendars for our busy end-of-year activities.

Part of the hustle and bustle of May are the area and state competitions. Our One Act Play competed at state last week. We are so proud of this group and their directors. They did not win state, but they are the first group to go to state from Richland Springs. Our track program is sending multiple athletes to state, and Sierra Tharp competes this week in the state golf tournament. We wish everyone the best of luck. They have worked hard to reach this elevated level.

Congratulations to coaches and parents for persevering through with their athletes.

Don’t forget the STAAR testing will be May 10-12 for elementary.

Please make sure your student gets plenty of rest and brings healthy snacks. We are all tired of studying and more than ready to complete this year. I’m not impressed by the new STAAR test they are planning to use. We have students trying desperately to catch up, and now we are going to a more difficult test. Some one tell me how to make sense of that, please.

We missed our shot at rain this week, and now we have record high temperatures combined with high winds to suck the life out of the soil. The rains come, split apart, and head every which way but here.

Please, God, send us a great two–three-inch rain

We are saddened to hear that Earl Patrick went to be with his Lord. Floyd Gossett said he went peacefully. He was 97 years old and lived an honest and God-fearing life. He will be missed. I never saw him down or discouraged, and his quick wit was delightful.

The following people need our prayers: Susan Gossett, Weldon Ransberger, George and Donna Hill, Dallas Larreau, and the people in Ukraine. Jean McKee, Kolton Bench, and Stetson Couch are all recovering from recent surgeries.

Please pray for our government, our president, and legislative members. Our country needs some healing, and our economy is making things difficult for lower-wage earners. We are strong and helpful people. If you are in need, there are food banks in San Saba and at the First Baptist Church in Richland. Stay strong, be patient and helpful, and enjoy life.

Don’t forget to support our local businesses. The Coyote One Stop has changed ownership. The Bailey family will be expanding the available merchandise, so please get out and support them. Skelton’s Hardware needs your business, The Feedlot, and Mann Glass employ locals. Keep our people working.

As a postscript, we are saddened to hear the Stagecoach has closed. I wish the staff all the best in their search for new employment. Thank you for your service to us. Please pray for those who protect us, but most of all pray for our precious troops and their families.
