Keep San Saba Beautiful holds a successful city-wide cleanup

On April 9, 2022, Keep San Saba Beautiful (KSSB) partnered with the City of San Saba, and sponsored by Atmos Energy, held a Great American Cleanup and Don’t Mess With Texas Trashoff city wide cleanup. The event started on Friday afternoon with City crews setting up the tent as the cleanup headquarters. Then, on Saturday morning, 105 volunteers collected approximately 17,000 pounds of trash, and recycled 59 tires, more than 40 pounds of plastic bottles, and 2000 pounds of metal.

Volunteers received cleanup supplies provided by corporate sponsors of Keep America Beautiful, free T-shirts provided by KSSB, and chances to win prizes. KSSB’s own, Oscar the Grouch, visited volunteers around town, encouraging litter pickup. Even the Easter Bunny made an appearance at the cleanup as the most unusual piece of trash, collected by the team of Rick, Gaston, and Lucas.

Taking the prize for the most volunteer recruits was Hill Country Bible Church San Saba, bringing 15 volunteers.

Thank you, HCBCSS; you made a great difference. Then, a tough decision on the winner for the most trash bags collected was between the team of Louis and Wesley and the team of Cindy, John, GT, Kyle, Robbie, and Jake. Since one team collected 19 bags of 30-45 gallon bags of trash and the other collected a pickup truck load, both teams received a prize. Can you believe all this trash came from along our Texas highways, North Highway 190 and CR200! Please DMWT (Don't Mess With Texas), folks.

All participants were entered into a drawing, and lucky Samuel Bessent was drawn as the winner. The plastic bottle recycling challenge sponsored by Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages was won by a hard-working young volunteer, Rextyn Hunt taking 1st place; Regina Baker come in 2nd place; and Sandra Vaughn took 3rd place. Thanks to all the participants in this challenge. The cleanup come to a close at noon with City employees cooking a delicious hamburger meal provided by Atmos Energy.
