Cpl. Calvin Daniel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cap Daniel, is stationed on Okinawa as a clerk in the headquarters section. His grandmother, Mrs. L. W. Robbins, was in last week to send him the hometown newspaper.

Miss Mary Evelyn Brister, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Brister of Colony, became the bride of Bill Herman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Herman of San Angelo, in a double ring ceremony performed Sunday, March 2.
Two births at the San Saba Memorial Hospital this past week: A girl, Sherry Pamela, was born March 1 to Mr. and Mrs. Drace Williams, weight 7 pounds 15 ounces; and a girl, Deborah, born March 1 to Mr. and Mrs. Tim Sterner, weight 6 pounds 1 ounce.
We are about to wear out our arm from tipping our hat today... but another bow to the kids of the Journalism classes in San Saba high school and their teacher, Mrs. Kay McKee. These kids raised the money for the $1500 electric scoreboard for Rogan Field. And it, along with our new steel-concrete-and redwood bleachers, will go into operation next fall...We can well be proud of these youngsters and their efforts..We tip our Stetsons to Mrs. McKee and her journalism students.

Mrs. Earl (Sadie) Thomas was in the right place at the right time Feb. 23. At around 10:00 p.m., Mrs. Thomas spotted a moving light in the sky south of her home. The light turned out to be a piece of a Russian satellite launched Feb. 16. Several sightings of the rocket were reported across the nation.
Congratulations go out to Mrs. Laverne Drews who was recently named Soil Conservation Teacher of the Year. Three others honored for their soil conservation efforts were Raymond Contreras, Alma Mata and Brian Reeves, all fourth graders in San Saba.
We now have a new chess champ. Scott Edmondson defeated Greg Taff in the final found. Now another tournament has started. Mr. Dennis, the chess coach said the more tournaments they play the tougher the competition becomes. This is a good noontime activity for the students.
County Judge Jimmy Shook signed a proclamation this week making March 14-21 "Older Worker Week." This special week is designed to spotlight the valuable qualities of the mature workers in San Saba County.
Mr. and Mrs. Pioquinto Hernandez announced the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Angela, to Jesse Torres Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Torres, Lometa. A graduate of San Saba High School, the bride-elect is a student of Central Texas Commercial College, Brownwood. Her fiance graduated from Lometa High School and is employed with the Santa Fe Railway Company.
Mrs. Ted Conner of San Saba and Mrs. Evelyn Sheard of Golden, Colo. recently returned from a Caribbean cruise. They enjoyed the 90-degree weather and returned with a good tan, while San Saba was in the midst of cold weather.
Don Jingles found something rather unnerving last Wednesday...nine live rattlesnakes. He found the snakes on a rock under a utility post near Locker. Jingles killed the snakes with a shovel.
San Saba High School Office Education Association members recently attended the Area III Conference in Austin. Accompanied by Advisor Patricia Herrington were Lori Fowler, who placed 3rd in Extemporaneous Verbal Communications; Paige Oliver and Karen Dawson, Bulletin Board Contestants; Maria Zapata, who placed 6th in Accounting and Leticia Jiminez, Typing and Related Contestant.
Occasionally we see a real "unusual" sight in town & it breaks the monotony of the day. Last week we almost had a few wrecks as this "gentleman" about 55-60, walked up & down the street carrying his bedroll, guitar, radio & tape player playing loudly! Today we happened to see this old Greyhound-type bus pulling a VW. A couple apparently lives in the bus, call Gypsy Fever!
