We hoped our snores would be louder than the fireworks
Hello there, my San Saba loves, and a Happy New Year to you! I am so sorry I was AWOL last week, but I was on a very important mission on my writing day. Yes, yes, I know, I could have planned to write my article in advance, had it ready to go. But unless you are reading my article for the first time, when have you ever known me to plan anything? If I wanted to emulate mom, I would go buy a pair of jeans, oversized shirts and white hair dye!
As I was saying, we had a huge day last Monday, or at least very long one. We left San Saba early in the morning and headed to Killeen for the hospital where mom was scheduled to eat radio-active eggs. Food is a big worry for mom as it has not been her friend. She doesn’t like it, and it does not like her. Anyway, she had to eat this egg, and then they took these special pictures of it inside her to see if it digested. We were there all day! Mom came out after she ate the egg and told us she only had 10 minutes and could only eat half the egg, but the tech said it was good enough. Dad and I had been in the waiting area talking to the nicest volunteer ever, Frank. Mom sat with us, and we all talked until she had to go back in an hour for the next picture. We did those five more times, but I have to say, we laughed, shared stories about family, growing up and life. It was wonderful. I do not think I have had more fun all the times I have had to go to the hospital with mom and only got upset when she would wheel down the hall to get another picture taken because I was terrified she would not come back. Hey, it has happened before in those places! I tell you guys, driving into San Saba never felt so good, relaxing and such a relief. Yeah, I am easy to please.
Would you like to know what the best invention in the world is, which by the way is a rhetorical question I will answer…hot dogs! I fully realize hot dogs are made with disgusting ingredients, and yet I inhale them as if I am presented with gourmet delights. Now what does that say about me? Am I uncouth and disgusting or just a dachshund who knows what he likes? Oh, good gosh, that is not a rhetorical question; anyone who reads this column knows I know exactly what I like!
I do not believe in New Year’s resolutions. But I do believe in wishing people I love well, and I so wish such for each of you. You are the reason for Happy Herman’s Hideaway, the purpose I want to share my life with you. I love you, dear readers, and thank you for being.
