December 12, 1940

Mrs. J. M. Carter was here Tuesday from her farm east of town. She was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Knight Carter.

Judge and Mrs. G. A. Walters had as guests this week their son, Ab Walters and wife of Overton, who came for an outing to get their deer. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Walters of Overton joined them on the weekend.

Twenty-two Armadillos reported for their first basketball workout Monday afternoon at the High School Gym. That number is expected to reach thirty after the Christmas holidays. The Armadillos are fortunate in securing the talent of coach Chrane, who will direct the 1941 aggregation.

The H. E. girls and M. A. boys were joint hosts to a banquet given Friday night. A large crowd was present. The menu consisted of barbecue and all its trimmings.

Mrs. H. C. Holcomb and Mrs. Clinton Holcomb and children of the Shiloh community were here shopping Tuesday.

Schubert and His Music was the theme of the program the Chaminade Music Club carried out Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. T. A. Murray, Jr. Following the business period presided over by the president, Mrs. Walter E. Gates, and during which the "Christmas Carol" was scheduled for Sunday night following church services, Dec. 22, the program ensued.

Joe Bornstein, formerly of San Saba, has become associated with the Wilensky Dry Goods Co. in Brady. Mrs. Bornstein has been in the dry goods field for a number of years, operating stores at Goldthwaite, Lometa, and San Saba.––Heart of Texas News.

Among the improvements made in the local schools during the past few weeks has been the installation of an inter-communication system, which connects the office of Supt. W. M. Campbell with all class rooms and halls in the high school and in the grammar school buildings. According to Supt. Campbell, this system makes it possible for him to "listen in" or to make announcements and send radio programs to any one room, to any combination of rooms or simultaneously to all rooms in the two buildings.

A plane trip to Fort Worth Sunday afternoon was a new experience for Mrs. Ida Kuykendall, 85, but she enjoyed it so much, she didn't want to miss the chance of making the return trip home by air also.

Richland Springs placed two Coyotes on the 8-B All-District football team, selected by the coaches of the district recently. John Barina, righthalfback, and Donald Wood, left tackle, received the honors. Mike Wallace, guard; Gary Wood, end; Carey Lee White, quarterback; and Frank Green, halfback, received honorable mention.

Miss Elaine Moore, San Saba county Pecan Queen, will be on her throne at one of the largest county pecan shows in the world Saturday, Dec. 10, when she will reign over San Saba County's sixth annual Pecan Show in the Pecan Capital of the World. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Moore, she won the honor of Pecan Queen recently over 13 other contestants of the county. She composed her own speech, I Am a Pecan Tree, which she presented in the contest. A 1960 honor graduate of San Saba High School where she was president of the Pep Squad and a cheerleader, secretary of National Honor Society, secretary of the Student Council, a member of the Annual Staff and active in all school activities, she now is employed in the office of The San Saba News and Star. Miss Moore was sponsored in the queen's contest by the American Legion.

Emmitt Lee and John Pat Grumbles, students at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, spent the Thanksgiving holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Grumbles.

Misses Ellen and Julia Joiner and their father, B. H. Joiner, accompanied by Mrs. W. S. Pence, took Thanksgiving dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Porter Pearcy on the Wimberly ranch. That afternoon Miss Julia took Mrs. Pence to Mason for a visit with Mrs. Pence's sister, Mrs. Frank Oldham.

A GMC pickup belonging to a Fort Worth man, who was hunting in the Cherokee area, was stolen from the hunting camp. Sheriff Brantley Barker was notified immediately and that same evening, the man, a San Saba county resident, was apprehended with the pickup in Brady. The man is being held in custody for the action of Grand Jury.
