Beginning its 85th year on Tuesday, September 7th, at 2:00 p.m., the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) will host its first 2021-2022 meeting in the historic Old Mill Pond Park Building across from the SS Park lake and waterfall. Debbie Shahan, newly elected President, will welcome the group to a pleasant two-hour meeting of fun and great refreshments! Interested visitors are welcome!
The Club, with 30 active members, three associate members, four emeritus members, and nine new members, is justly proud of its motto, “Not for ourselves, but for others!” and its Creed:
“I believe in my community. I believe in her people, boys and girls.
I will endeavor to make this a more
Beautiful place in which to live.
I believe in trees and grass instead Of ash heaps and tin cans. Flowers instead of weeds!”
All members, new and returning, are welcomed for interesting programs, refreshments, and lively discussions! The Club theme for the new year is “Plant America…Enjoy the Journey!” Various planned programs during the year will include history of the club and the Old Mill Pond Building, home and ranch garden tours, visits to interesting sites including gardens in Weatherford, Texas, plans for effective weed control, cooking with herbs, and various craft activities such as making garden stepping stones.
SSGC is a dynamic organization which has won many awards including those of the District V Garden Club as well as the State of Texas Garden Club for a variety of activities including the State First Place Yearbook. San Saba community activities include: maintaining the Club’s attractive historic holiday cart and the Old Mill Pond Building, providing scholarships for SSISD seniors, conducting the spring tea for the local nursing home, maintaining park flower gardens with Keep San Saba Beautiful (KSSB), helping to maintain the senior citizens’ center flower beds and the pollinator garden at the SSISD elementary school, plus working with KSSB to conduct the Kids’ Nature Kamp every summer!
A record number of 35 elementary-aged children enrolled in the 6th Annual Nature Kamp in June, 2021, where SSGC members and other community members worked with the children’s groups, directing fun nature learning activities in and around the club house and nearby parks.
Prospective members are welcomed and encouraged to visit the September 7th meeting!
