July 21, 1955

The County Commissioners Court in session Tuesday called for bids on furnishing and installing a refrigerated air conditioning central unit in the San Saba Memorial Hospital. Estimated cost on the unit plus installation is between $3,000 and $4,000. Air ducts to all rooms in the hospital and fans in the air circulating system were installed when the hospital was built, but no cooling unit was installed.

John Ferrell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ferrell of San Saba, has been an outstanding band student in the local schools for several years and received his Tarleton scholarship in music for the 1955-56 school year.

County Judge Warden Terry will put jurisprudence aside Saturday afternoon and turn his talents to a different kind of judging. Llano, which will formally open its new swimming pool Saturday, has invited Terry to be one of the judges in their bathing beauty contest.

Mrs. Roy Tatsch recently had her mother, two sisters, brother-in-law and niece visiting from New York. They enjoyed the trip down, but the niece was disappointed in not seeing cowboys and oil millionaires. They were to journey on to Oregon to visit another daughter and sister before returning to New York.

Diamond coring is underway this week on the Will Egger ranch

15 miles southeast of San Saba where uranium ore samples are being taken for assay and evaluation of the radioactive formation which comes to within 3 1/2 feet to the surface on the ranch, according to Raymond Roberson of San Saba, one of three partners holding a 16,000-acre lease in that area.

The San Saba Class A Tractor Pull is a popular event for San Sabans as a record number of local residents will prove when they, along with several hundred other Texans, flock to the arena this year. The purse has grown from a mere $4,000 which was offered at the first Pull held in 1976 to $11,000 which is offered at the 1985 event.

Cassie Gage, daughter of Dean and Andrea Gage of San Saba, and Allen Nelson, Jr., son of Allen and Margie Nelson of Morrilton, Arkansas, announce their plans to be united in matrimony July 20 in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The couple will make their home in San Saba. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Hoot and Nona Gibson of Richland Springs, and Zelma Gage and the late Clem Gage of San Saba.

Mrs. Lillie Smith, former resident of Cherokee now residing in San Marcos, was honored on her 90th birthday at a reception, July 6, at the Cherokee Church of Christ Annex.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Stevenson of Lometa, formerly of the Colony community, will observe their 60th wedding anniversary on July 18. Helping them celebrate will be their daughters, Mrs. Wilma Klein and Mrs. June Jordan, and families of San Antonio. A third daughter, Mrs. Leona Cramblit of Wisconsin, will be unable to attend.

During a meeting held July 15, the San Saba ISD School Board added to the faculty by hiring four teachers. Those added to the faculty include Mary Jane Carter who will head the Home Economics Department at San Saba High School and Ken McCoy who will teach a Jr. High math class vacated by Les Hardy. Serving as Matching Teachers in the 7th and 8th grade lower level classes will be Debbie Shahan and Judy McCoy.

SPICED PEACHES

Use this method of pickling for pears or peaches. Serve with baked ham or as part of a fruit salad.

1/2 c. vinegar

8 canned peach halves

1 c. juice from peaches

1/4 c. sugar

1 stick cinnamon

1 tsp. whole cloves

Combine the vinegar, juice from peaches, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Boil until reduced by about half. Remove the spices. Stick the cloves into the peach halves, and pour the syrup over the peaches; let stand overnight in the refrigerator.
