Happy Herman's Hideaway

Life Isn’t a Plan

Hello, my San Saba loves and how have you been since our last discussion in the pages between black and white of journalism? Speaking of which, I asked mom how she happened to become associated with the newspaper, and she said through a street dance and how she described the experience on Facebook, a friend reading it worked for the paper and wanted to share it with her editor…the rest is as they say history. The Schulz writers have been writing for the paper for a very long time now, first mom, then Patches and now crazy old me, all of us with very different styles.

As I think about what I just told you, the full force of my words hit me and sent me reeling. Who in their right mind would want to follow mom and Patches in column writing? I sound like a dew drop to their cacophony of rain symphonic melody when it comes to composing words but I do have that rather adorable, smart-aleck thing going for me. Hey, I shall take it every time as it reminds me of a saying…Go forth and prosper!

There have been so many thoughts going through my mind about humans and for such good reason. Now, I will admit I have spoken about Rowena and flies in a less than flattering manner and perhaps complained about the parentals from time to time, but my heart has been more in a teasing nature and there has never been an ounce of real animosity. Our world seems so broken, so shattered and lost in its own self-destruction and my heart cries watching. Perhaps I am thinking of this because I have family visiting this week and two more different examples of human beings you could never put together in the same room!

As it turns out, you see, mom’s brother and sister-in-law from San Francisco, California will be here, and then her sister and brother-in-law will be here on the same days. Now mom’s brother, David, was born and brought up in Texas but moved to California a very long time ago. He holds no fondness for Texas or the intelligence of its inhabitants. David is educated, well-read and well-traveled.

On the other hand, my Lani has had a rough life but has worked hard to be loyal to her family and do the best she could with the life she was given. I look at them and I see two people worthy of love, with hands to give me belly rubs, wonderful treats, soft and gentle strokes on my head. I see potential for laughter, and the acceptance to take joy in the moments we have together with mom and dad.

I so believe if the entire world adopted such an attitude, we could stop all the contentious banter, senseless hatred and the violence. Life is priceless always, humans are priceless always, while opinions, prejudices and being an intellectual snob…almost never!

I love you, my San Saba sweethearts, and I hope you have a truly wonderful week. Try not to stay out too long and become a fried egg in the sun even though I know each of you is such a ‘good egg.’ Oh, speaking of good eggs, the parentals and I want to give a big hello and we love and miss you to Alice Smith! Thank you for being!
