Lucy Hernandez came on board with Heritage Funeral Home as their office manager about a month ago. She is single and lives in Lometa. Having always lived in Lometa, Lucy is very familiar with the San Saba area. In addition to her family in Lometa, she has family members in San Saba. When I asked about hobbies, Lucy stated she has just picked up crochet and likes it. She also likes to read. Heritage is Lucy’s first funeral home experience. I asked her to describe her responsibilities at Heritage as the Office Manager. She stated she works on contracts, memory books, getting visitations together, pre-needs planning, among other things. Although she speaks very little Spanish, the Funeral Director, Savio, is available to act as a translator. Lucy explained that she had to obtain her pre-needs license to provide that service to families. She received training through Unity, the company Heritage uses for pre-needs contracts and had an extensive background check to get licensed. I asked Lucy if she ever has clients come into her office who have no idea what to do concerning preneeds or funeral arrangements for a loved one. How does she handle that? She stated it was a little hard at first, but she soon realized, “I need to be this rock for them and explain it the best way that I know how so they understand. It makes it easier, and it eases them to know that we do care enough to put ourselves in their shoes.” During any downtime at work, between visits with families, Lucy spends her time trying to improve her skills at work and finding better ways to assist families in their planning. When I was there, she was working on improving the memory guides for services. The next question for Lucy was what she has to offer San Saba? Lucy replied she wants to be as involved with the community as possible. She stated, “I’d like everyone here to know that I care. I am always going to be here whether they need a service from us or not. . . someone that they can turn to.” Stop in at Heritage Funeral Home and welcome Lucy to San Saba and her new position! She will be happy to visit with you and your family. . . to learn more about you and learn more about San Saba! Call her at 325-372-3923, if you need an appointment.
