May 13, 1971

Jack Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Buster Martin, received the bachelor of science degree from Abilene Christian College during spring commencement exercises May 9.

Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Lambert, along with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pearson and family of Lubbock, attended graduation exercises at Texas A&M University May 8, when Ricky Lambert received his degree. John Fisher was in Del City, Okla. Saturday to attend the Mid-Del-Tinker Kennel Club dog show where his Pug, "Topper," placed first in his class for one point. Sunday Fisher went to Lawton, Okla. for the Lawton-Fort Sill Kennel Club show, and Topper went best of winners for one more point. The Pug lacks only three more points to complete his championship requirement.

Edward Shapiro, San Saba's only track man to qualify for State, placed fourth in the State discus event with a throw of 161 feet. Coach Baskin said that Shapiro was real consistent in his throwing the discus. A student from Sealy took first place with a throw of 166 feet.

Thomas D. Brown, local junior high coach and teacher of social studies and language arts, has been named the new head coach for Lometa High School. Brown was born and reared in Richland Springs and graduated from Richland Springs High School. He has been a member of the San Saba coaching staff the past five years.

Mrs. Pattie Templeton Anglin and children visited friends and relatives in Richland Springs over the weekend. Mrs. Anglin attended the Alumni Banquet at Richland Springs.

Several business houses were broken into last week, but nothing was taken from any of the places according to Sheriff Brantley Barker, who was investigating the incidents. One of the small glasses in the door to the office of Van Cleave ARCO Station was broken and the back door of City Cleaners was broken in, Sheriff Barker said. The side room at Jesse Miles' Texaco Station was entered by a back window. Sheriff Barker said the owners had missed nothing at any of the three places.

May 16, 1991

Brad McCoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken McCoy of San Saba, recently was inducted into "A" Club, a men's honor society at Abilene Christian University. Membership of the club is based on a 3.0 grade point average, teacher nominations and good character.

San Saba's Tina Pulatie won second place in the Triple Jump and fourth in the Long Jump in the State Class AA finals. The sophomore plans to return next year for the Gold.

Members of the San Saba Garden Club pitched in to improve the looks of the area in front of the courthouse where the Chamber of Commerce Marquee is located. The historic rock was moved to the museum and in its place will be a flower garden. Garden Club members getting the plot ready were Sharon Hayes, Mary Weaver, Maxine Miffleton, Donna Evans, Mada Lee Smith and Bonnie Harkey.

Topping the list of 10 graduating seniors at Richland Springs High School will be Valedictorian Stacie Smith and Salutatorian Felicia Fowler. Graduation will be in Baptist Church. The annual gradua tion edition will be published including Richland Springs, Cherokee and San Saba graduates.

The San Saba High School girls golf team won their way to the State tournament again this year and despite a slow start, won fifth place in Class AA. Carrying the Purple and Gold colors to Austin were Laura Scott, Tammie Huffstetler, Corrie Schulze, Kristi Anderson, Alicia Parker, Sara Ragsdale and Jessica Riggs.

Parts of San Saba County were swept with a thunderstorm with torrential rains of up to five inches unofficially. In the city of San Saba several gauges registered from 3.5 to 4 inches while the official gauge at Mill Pond Park totaled 2.08 inches -- .16 before 9 a.m. and 1.92 by 1 p.m. Some San Saba residents had water in their houses. Cross Timbers Clinic on SH 16 north was flooded with water. Sewer lines, unable to handle the flow were popping their iron covers on Hwy. 190 west.
