The Richland Springs Report

Every teacher will tell you that once spring arrives, life gets busier and more complicated. STAAR tests start next week and go sporadically through to the end of May. That means schedules fluctuate daily. This week, we had UIL on Friday and Monday. Monday was not a problem, but Friday meant we had to cancel classes to accommodate competitions in both buildings and so that teachers could be available to run competitions and grade results. On a positive note, we are going into the Monday speaking events in first place. We don’t usually have that happen because we don’t have enough students to compete against schools like Lometa. I don’t know how Monday will go, but it feels good to be in first place. Go Coyotes; howl until you win.

Results are in, and Richland Springs has the lead thus far in district UIL Academic Competition! UIL Competition continues Monday with speaking events in Lometa. Good luck to all our participants! Our regional qualifiers are:

Thank you, Mrs. Starr, Sarah Locker, Jessica Starr, and all teachers who made this such a successful event. Thank you also to the local churches who provided food for our visitors. Our guests were awed by the support we receive from our community. Thank you all.

I hope everyone was able to go by the Community Center and pick up some yummy pancakes. Thank you to the beautification committee for all their work. I picked mine up after church, so I didn’t have to cook lunch for Russ. Frank Pearce cooks up a mean breakfast.

Church services for First Baptist will be a little earlier than usual. We will be egg hunting at 9:30 a.m. Church fellowship under the Tabernacle will follow. All members and visitors are requested to bring their own lawn chair. We will be able to provide a chair if you arrive without one. Some of the benches need repair. Donuts, coffee, juice, and milk will be provided for all attendees. You do not have to be a member of the church to come and share with us. All children are welcome to hunt for eggs.

The fund raiser for the Wayne Gossett scholarship on Saturday was a great success. There was plenty of great food, down home music, and enough fellowship to make the saddest heart happy. Thank you everyone for participating. Some lucky senior will be receiving funds for their freshman year of college.

This week, we will dismiss Friday for Good Friday. Two classes will have to do STAAR testing; the 4th and 7th grade students will take the writing test. As I said before, the spring crazies have begun. For those of you who study the skies, the next three full moons will appear to be bigger than usual because the moon is closer to the earth. I read that this month’s moon is called the worm moon. I imagine that’s because all those nasty little bugs will start coming out to eat all the plants. The largest appearing moon will be in May.

Charlie Clayton is home and needing prayer. We have several community members fighting cancer and several more who are feeling their advanced prayers. Please spend a moment in prayer for all of them; better yet, go by and see if you can be of assistance. Please pray for our border crisis, hopefully we will not have new outbreaks of Covid. Pray for our president, Congress, and justice system. We need to see cooperation and peace in our country. Our police officers are still under siege and need continual prayers for protection. Most of all pray for our precious soldiers and their families. Have a great week, everyone. This week is the holiest holiday for Christianity; please take a moment and make sure you know where your final destination will be.
