We received a treat this week from Mrs. A. Stroble, she sent us a big bunch of turnips and they looked like they were grown in early spring instead of midwinter, Mr. and Mrs. A Stroble are No. 1 gardeners.
Everybody stops at the window of Fred Townsend's tailor shop to look at the beautiful back-ground which has been placed there this week. Fred did that with a magic brush and an artistic hand. The work is exquisite and anyone who has the gift of appreciation can see the hand of an artist did this work. Thus much talent lies around dormant and if developed it would make many minds glad.
Richland Springs has had a Rabbit Drive. San Saba is going to wait until after Easter as it is not a wise idea to kill these rabbits right before the laying season. We deprive our children of a great deal of pleasure if we should kill all the "bunnies" just at this time––Easter comes in March.
The ceiling of the school house at Little Bend ignited from a defective flue Wednesday and the teachers and pupils had to make a heroic fight to put out the fire per bucket brigade. No serious damage except quite a big hole in the ceiling was the result.
Names will be received at this office for the new Pecan Paper which will shortly make its appearance in this county. W. T. Moore of the Bend will be publisher of the new paper. All interested in this new paper send in a name for it and we will publish them as they come in.
Bill Millican of the Bend was here this week and had proof that the root system of the pecan tree can be developed. He had a 4-year old pecan tree that had as many off-shoot roots as a Mississippi cane-break fishing pole. It has been claimed that the pecan only has the tap root, but Bill has a variety of pecans which have a bad case of feeders for moisture.

Mr. E. Sawyer of Richland Springs was a visitor here today.

Mrs. Rubert Christmas and son, W. C., of Bowser, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Alston of Richland Spgs. visited friends in Menard Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Lemon Rawls of Locker visited with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cowart over the week-end.
We looked over the mattress factory in the Bend Methodist Church building last Monday morning, where there were 14 mattresses under construction, and all the housewives of this section were sewing or pounding or some task to this industry. There was another shift started as soon as this one was over, so we predict there will be late hours in bed for most of the farmers.
I have my own water system and any one who wishes to get their drinking water from my well is perfectly welcome to do so. – Mrs. W. H. Joekel
A CORRECTION–Our attention has been called to the building report of the past week, which stated that the W. F. and J. F. Barnes Lumber Co. furnished the material for the T. Jay Mabry home, which should have read Wm. Cameron & Co. Inc., is furnishing the material.
W. A. Burnam was here from his ranch the first of the week.
J. T. Kelly, Jr., successfully made his examinations to enter the U.S. Navy and will report in Dallas today, from where he will be sent to Santiago, Calif. for entrance. He will serve six years. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Kelly of this county.
McConnell Brothers have contracted 150 acres of ranch land for the eradication of cedar.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. McConnell made a business trip to Waco the past week.
