The Richland Springs Report

The chickens have found a new home with Mrs. Soto.

Miss Bea’s good laying hen moved on to glory land, so she was ready for some new layers. There are three of the six laying, so that should give her some good eggs soon.

I have decided I prefer the new eggs. The yolks are compact, and the egg is just the right size for eating.

My daughter told me to put away all my lose items in the yards before the front gets here tonight. I think I have become southernized because I kept talking about this cold front, and Russ set me straight: it’s just a cool front. Cold fronts mean a whole heap of trouble where I come from in Canada. My sister, Dee, is refusing to light the wood stove just because it is too early, but my little snowbird sister doesn’t like the cold at all. The border is still closed, so they will not be able to go to their place in Florida. I haven’t checked the almanac to see what kind of winter is predicted for us.

The football game Friday night was a really good game. The score does not reflect the caliber of the Baird team. We were fortunate that their quarterback could not quite get his range right. Of course, normally, he would not have guys rushing him and pulling him from the pocket. I heard Keston Lusty’s name several times on solid defensive plays. So, thank you defense, for a great game. Our offense was cooking up some super plays. Landon Burkhart, Jadeyn Bryant, and Zane Capps sprinted for several long touchdowns. It looked as if Zane pulled a muscle or tendon on one of his long runs. Chase Gossett was solid on extra-point kicks. The team played well together, and they deserved their win.

I want to give a big shout out to our cheerleaders for all their hard work.

The game was followed by the traditional Fifth Quarter meal at the Baptist fellowship hall. The visiting team was given to-go meals for their long trip home. Once again, the Shiloh and First Baptist ladies came through. Our next week’s game is the homecoming game.

I need to mention that Mrs. Behrens did a great job on the National Anthem. Next week’s anthem will feature our teachers.

The first Monday Church for the kids was outstanding. About 12 kids were expected, and 19 showed up. We had some five teenagers helping as well as six adults. The reports for Tuesday were unanimous: it was super fun. Hopefully, the accolades will continue.

Thank you to all the parents who send their students, the teens who help, and the adults who give up their valuable time to work with our local kids. Our kids are important. Coach Burkhart tells me they are organizing a Fields of Faith event here on our home field. I heard Goldthwaite is also having a Fields of Faith event. This is typically a huge event held in Brownwood, but COVID has put a crimp in the proceedings. I’m sure the smaller event will be just as invigorating to our student’s spiritual life.

Mrs. Starr and I are going to dress as Thing 1 and 2 for twins’ day. Mrs. Locker and Mrs. Perry are going to be M&Ms. I will try to get a picture taken for next week’s issue. Although I love Spirit Week, I do not look forward to the mayhem that takes place.

I don’t know why mayhem brings another thought to my mind, but I want to give my 5th graders a big hand for the stupendous job they did in the concession stand last Thursday. Mr. McKinnerney was there to assist, but I was immensely proud of the job they did. We found out we had two quick and accurate math students, and a few who needed to put pen to paper.

The prayer list of sick folks in the community is long and urgent. We have at least six folks fighting cancer. I understand Will Robertson is doing better, and so is Tiny Shannon. There are several newly diagnosed cases which will require much prayer. Mary McKee is in the hospital; her daughter Heather is still recovering from jaw surgery. My son, Scott, had a hefty chunk cut out of his cheek right under his left eye. He says it is the result of long hours out in the desert sun. Whatever the cause, he is going to have a battle scar.

Congratulations to Ty Mann on his new status as a law enforcement offcer. He will need our prayers as do so many other officers need support and prayers. We need massive prayers for our upcoming elections in November. Please study your party platforms and align them up with your own personal moral code. Whatever happens, please get out and vote.

George and Donna Hill have been making frequent trips to the doctor to get some pain relief. It appears they may have finally succeeded. George’s two daughters and their husbands came down this weekend to see how dad was doing. Parents love to see their children. I know my heart beats happier when my kids are here.

Jerry and Bonnie Burkhart have a new domicile. They have bought a home and will be living on the same property as Sandy Reed. I don’t know who is happier, Bonnie or Sandy. Please say a special prayer for the firefighters in California. I hope to see all of you next Friday. Most of all, please pray for our precious troops and their families.
