Happy Herman's Hideaway

A Little Change

Hello, my San Saba loves, and I hope you are well and thriving. My goodness how life can take a few turns in a short time; ours did this past week. I suppose that is where the term “go with the flow” originated. I am writing this column, so obviously I didn’t get washed away. We had made the heart

We had made the heart breaking decision to re-home our adorable cat, Little, and on Wednesday morning Kate with San Saba County Friends of Animals came to bring her to her new chance for a great life. Late in the afternoon, Kate called to let mom know Little arrived, settled in and even checked out her neighbor cat which was a miracle. At home, if she even saw another cat she would let out the most blood curdling, terrorizing screams you could ever hear! It seems our house ceased to be home and more of a place she associated with trauma. We are so pleased there is hope for her to find happiness.

With the front porch clear now, the large cat tree gone, no litter box, or steps leading to the window ledge, it is yet another place for me to spend time exploring the world, and how different it is than backyard! I see people doing things, getting in and out of cars, bringing out trash cans, walking, standing in their yard talking to people! I put my nose through the lattice and watch cars drive by and wonder where they are going.

There is something else… you know how some people like sailing…well I have discovered snailing. The front porch is covered in snails, and I mean they are all over the place. And I love trying to bite them off their resting place. Yes, of course mom tells me to cease, desist, stop, no and tries to make me go inside, but do I get discouraged…nope, I am a dachshund. Even if she makes me go inside, I remember exactly the location of the snail I was last trying to get and go try to get him the next time I am on the porch. Mom tells me I am not allowed to have them because they have a shell, and I will crunch them, eat the shell and hurt my stomach. I am sure she isn’t lying to me; mom doesn’t do that. But oh my, they are so much fun to hunt!

Okay, that is the fun news, and now for my bad news… mom bought a floor buffer, and I may have to think about moving! Look, we have mops, Swiffer sweepers, brooms, vacuums, dusters, so why, why, why did she have to go buy another torture device she knows will send me reeling? Life may not be fair, but humans certainly can be!

Well, my darling friends, I hope with all my heart all the children who began school had a seamless and wonderful start to their new year. Education is the pathway to a future and making your hope possible. I love you, my San Saba sweethearts; stay well, be considerate and thank you for being!
