Now the fireworks have settled from the July 4th celebrating. The town was fairly deserted on the holiday. Everyone either off for a day's outing on a stream or lake or stayed in their "air conditioned" homes... Old Glory along side the United Nations Flag was seen flying from the court house lawn...One business firm, Golding Motors, had out the U. S. flag...The Post Office, as usual on special days, displayed the stars and stripes... Homes noted that had out the colors were the Marshall W. Trussells and the C. D. Sullivans.

W. R. Benson, San Saba veterinarian, will take 15 days of training for reserve officers at Fort Hood from July 12 through July 26. He holds a reserve commission of first lieutenant in the Army Veterinary Corps. During Dr. Benson's absence, Dr. J. W. Taylor, San Angelo veterinarian, will be on duty at the Animal Hospital and will be on night call at Benson's residence.

Park development work on the grounds surrounding the new swimming pool at San Saba has been suspended temporarily. The weather is too hot and funds have run out. Sam P. Everett, head of the park development committee, says his group plans to resume work when the worst of the summer heat has passed. This task of clearing underbrush, grass, weeds and rubbish from the park area has been undertaken by volunteer workers or by laborers hired by donated funds.

Pvt. Elvis Joe Ballew arrived home Saturday for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Ballew. He has been assigned with the 547th Field Artillery at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, where he has been serving as fire director, assisting in instructing National Guard men there. He will return to his regular base at Colorado Springs, Colo., in September. His visit with home folks will end Saturday.

Natalie Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Scott, is one of three girls from San Saba who qualified to compete in the World Competition of the "Our Little Miss" contest scheduled to be held in Las Vegas.

Elm Grove–Since we have last written the news we have received 5.7 inches of rain which fell last Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning. This brings the total for June to 12 inches and the year's total to 30.2 inches.

The Horseshow and Playday brought out a record number of entries Saturday and it took over 12 hours to run it all off, that is, what they could before the thunderstorm came in. They had to scratch the jackpot barrels and adult flags.

There's a new face on the ground floor level of the San Saba County Courthouse – her name is Melissa Smith and she is the new County Extension Agent for the home economics program. Mrs. Smith recently moved to San Saba with her husband L. Gregory Smith who is employed in Lampasas as an educational diagnostician.

Richland Springs 4-H Club members Melissa Evans and Roi-Ann Burnham qualified for the State Horse Show at the District 8 Horse Show held last Wednesday in Waco, according to County Agent, Billy Kidd. Melissa won the stake race, placed 2nd in barrel racing, 2nd at halter, and 5th in pole bending. Roi-Ann placed 2nd in Western Riding, 7th in showmanship, 8th in Western Pleasure and 9th in Western Horsemanship.
