The Richland Springs Report

By the time you get your paper Thursday, I will be in Stonewall, Texas. The quilting ladies and I are headed to four days of hard sewing. I am looking forward to this trip just so I don’t have to do yard work. I can say for myself that I have done more outdoor work in the last two months than ever in my life. The weather was perfect, the rains were plentiful, and things just worked out. My yard shows the results of all that hard work. Russ keeps me hopping.

He finally has a helper all day long, and he is loving it. I love the results. Still, I am looking forward to being indoors during the heat.

The heat has arrived, and that is going to cut down my outside time.

When you read this next sentence, you are going to wonder about me just a little more. You see, coming from Canada, I don’t sweat very much. It has caused problems over the years. As I was working out in the sun yesterday pulling weeds, I started dripping perspiration. What an amazingly disgusting thing. Russ is right; it cools you down when the wind blows. I’m not sure if I should be happy or sad. Hopefully, it will enable me to stay out a little longer without having a heat stroke.

The garden is producing, and the plants are huge this year. I am putting that down to Mark’s preparation, the spring rains and perfect weather. I even have tiny ears of corn. I haven’t planted corn in years because the last bunch had those nasty worms.

Call me a sissy if you want; I don’t do worms.

Thank you to all those who responded to my skunk post on Facebook. I have been watching this all-white skunk (except for a black head) wander back and forth every morning from about 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. I was worried that it might be rabid, but the consensus is that it is probably a female with kits. That makes me feel a little better, but the thought of more skunks hanging around is not pleasant. She even came up to my fishpond which is in the front yard. That is way too close for comfort. I guess I will leave her alone for now.

I understand congratulations are in order for Robert Gibson, son of Kathy and Rob Brockman. Young Rob is now a happily married man. Congratulations and best of luck in the future. The wedding was proudly officiated by Pastor Bob Brockman. His preaching career spans many decades. What a privilege for young Rob to have his grandfather preach his wedding. A reception was held for close family at the First Baptist Church on Friday. Kathy and Rob are waiting for their daughter Kendra to give birth any day. I guarantee Kathy is going to be a busy Granny. The question is will she make it to the quilting retreat on Thursday?

This week, the Elkin’s family will receive their quilt lovingly completed by the quilting and Bible study group. Jennifer, Mack’s wife, wanted Civil War colors. I had so much trouble with my square because I am not a muted-color person. I must admit that Kay was right. The quilt colors are magnificent. A reception with light snacks will be held on Tuesday, the 9th at 4:00 p.m. I hope Brother Mack will be there, but he has been deployed to a secret location to work with the combined storms of COVID, racial tensions, and tropical storms. We just want him home.

With any luck and due diligence, I will be able to post some photos of the quilting retreat. I am off to the back for some berry-picking sessions. I realize that means I will go quilting with scratches all over my arms, legs, hands, face and wherever those nasty vines decide to grab. I will enjoy the cobbler.

I don’t need to tell you our country is in a mess right now. There is so much anger and destruction happening all around the country. We need some serious prayer for all the parties involved. I want to pray for the people who are pushing the destruction. Floyd’s family have asked for peaceful protests, but some are not willing for that. Please pray for our country, our President, and our congress. We need unity in our country as well as change. We need prayer for our police officers. Many are choosing to walk away from a profession they love because of recent happenings. We need our officers. They stand between us and anarchy. I usually end this column with most of all pray for our precious troops and their families, but I will have to add: pray for our precious police officers and their families.
