Hungry? Thirsty?

There is hardly any desire we have more than that of being thirsty when we have been working and we have not taken the time to get a drink. Or when we have gone for a good while without eating anything. The body needs to stay hydrated and have food for fuel so that we can continue to function in this world.

While this is important for us, it is just as important to make sure we are being supplied with spiritual food. It was Jesus who said in the beatitudes in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Many times people forget that this hunger needs to be taken care of. They have a hunger for wealth, beauty, popularity and a host of other things, but they forget that which continues to exist for all time.

Wealth can be lost, beauty is fleeting, and one who may be popular today may not be tomorrow. Thus, it is important that we put our emphasis on the most important things—spiritual things—in order that when we leave this earth (and we all will) we will be prepared to meet God.

While reading through the Psalms the other day I found this to be a true statement as well. The Psalmist in 107:9 tells us, “For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, and the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.” I firmly believe that today our God will satisfy our thirst that we have for His word. I also believe He will fill us up on His word when we are taking the time to get involved in it. Do you believe this as well? It is true.

There may have been times that you did not have this hunger and thirst. During these times you were just trying to make it on your own knowledge, your own power, and somewhere along the line you probably did not accomplish all that you desired to. Perhaps today you are not doing as well as you could. Do you have a hunger and thirst for the word of God in your life? Are you spending time with God each day reading His word and studying it so your faith can mature and you can serve God to the best of your abilities?

If the answer to these is “no” why not begin today to let God speak to you and be encouraged from the word of God? Set up a particular time to study each day. Take notes. Pray to God and ask for His guidance, wisdom and understanding as you read the word. Do not let anything hinder your time to quench your thirst and feed your soul. Notice the opportunities that come your way to serve and help others. As you (we) do, our God will bless our efforts, and we can be confident in His teaching.
