110 Years Ago September 14, 1916
Saud Sallee and John White, farmers living a few miles south of Cherokee in the Taylorville settlement, became engaged in a difficulty over hogs running at large. Sallee using a knife, stabbed White six times. Sallee gave himself up to the officers, and gave bond in the sum of $750.00 to await the action of the grand jury. Mr. White was resting well.
Misses Lura and Annie Ruth Gray, Ruth Harkey, Mrs. S. L. Kirk and Messrs. Herbert Clark, David Smalensky, Monroe Carroll, Murry Fentress Bum and Ab Walters enjoyed a bird hunt a few miles north of town and in all, thirty birds were killed. In the evening the party gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kirk and roasted the birds, afterwards going for a moonlight auto spin.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hall and children spent the weekend with Mr. Hall's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Benham, at Brownwood. Sunday was Mr. Hall's birthday anniversary, and an immeasurably pleasant day was spent with a sumptuous dinner served at the noon hour.
The Star is late this week, but the reason therefore will be good news to our readers. Our new Model 5 linotype is here at last, fully installed, and grinding out type slugs from which to print the paper faster than two reporters and one editor can write the copy.
Rudolph Krauss charged with attempt to poison his wife at Lometa and whose trial was set for this week in the District Court of Lampasas, plead guilty and was fined $25.00 and costs. Mr. Krauss was at one time a citizen of this place and owned the City Bakery. It was while he resided here that he married Miss Addie Kelley.

First Baby of the Month was Senorita Virginia Anna Ramirez, born at 2:05 a.m. Sept. 5, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julian C. Ramirez. She weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces. She has four sisters to welcome her, Maria 4, Susie 3, Beatrice 2, and Jane 1. The father , a San Saba native, does farm and ranch work at Wallace Creek. The mother is the former Maria Botello, native of Concho county.
The Coyote squad travels to Waco to meet the highly-regarded Connaly High. On the home field the Coyotes allowed Lometa a net gain of only 38 yards compared with 380 yards for Richland Springs. Lometa scored late in the game against Richland's substitutes. Coach Bob Millan cleared the benches and let all 24 men in his traveling squad to see action.
The Hall community has only ten school children this year –– once they had a three teacher school here. They are, John, Edith and Elaine Barina; Bertha Lou Ray; Mahlon and Gayle Smith; and Jimmy and Carolyn Leach.
A pretty sight is the Corral Drive-In Theatre, one mile south of town on Highway 16, with its new entrance and bright colors. San Sabans are appreciative of the new modern screen replacing one destroyed by fire early in the summer. Congratulations Abe and Alice Willis––it's pretty fancy.
The house of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hamrick at 204 Commerce is in the pink. It has a new coat of candy pink paint with new grey roof, a very pretty combination. Another newly painted house is that of Mr. and Mrs. V. P. (Poly) Millican––white with green trim. They live on West Dry.
