Thursday, August 6, brought members of the San Saba community and local conservation and resource organizations together for the first annual Conservation Connection.
Representatives from Hickory UWCD, NRCS, the San Saba County Historical Museum, Hill Country Community Action Association, San Saba County AgriLife Extension, San Saba Garden Club, Texas Division of Emergency Management, and Friends of the San Saba shared information about their organizations, their work, and the resources available to the community.
A wide variety of topics were covered throughout the morning. Hickory UWCD shared information about the District’s purpose, services, and some of the legal requirements associated with wells. TDEM discussed the importance of cybersecurity for our water supplies, along with the many services the agency provides. NRCS highlighted the programs it oversees and helps fund, while representatives from HCCAA and the AgriLife Extension office shared more about the roles their organizations play in serving San Saba County.
The San Saba Garden Club shared a particularly heartwarming story about how the community came together following last year’s devastating floods, which destroyed the Garden Club’s building. Their story was a wonderful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together to help one another.
Friends of the San Saba shared their mission and their commitment to protecting the San Saba River, including their recent legislative efforts concerning the proposed 765-kV transmission lines.
And, of course, the audience had plenty of great questions! The conversations and questions throughout the morning demonstrated just how much interest there is in the resources, organizations, and issues affecting our community.
At the conclusion of the event, Marsha Hardy was the lucky winner of the 50-gallon rainwater harvesting barrel!
There was considerable interest in future Conservation Connection events, including the possibility of round-table discussions where community members could engage directly with participating agencies and organizations.
