80 Years Ago July 4, 1946
County Judge Burns Lane announced plans were in progress for the construction of a small hospital to serve this farming community. Plans are drawn for a seven bed hospital to cost around $10,000.
It was a surprise to Jas. M. Walker, local stockfarmer, when he heard that he had been awarded first prize as the most typical cowboy in the recent rodeo street parade here, because Walker was not competing for a prize, in fact was not taking part in the parade, it has been stated.
Mrs. Tessie Bell Carroll will leave for San Francisco where she will embark for Okinawa to join her husband, Chief Warrant Officer Samuel N. Carroll, who has been in the U. S. Army for 11 years. They have two children. Mrs. Carroll is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Startz.
Raymond Barker and J. T. Barker, members of the San Saba Chapter of Future Farmers, recently received notice that they had been approved to receive the Lone Star Farmer Degree from the state office of Future Farmers.
50 Years Ago July 1, 1976
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Lehrer and daughter of Lampasas visited Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lehrer and viewed what lightning did to their house. Rocks wee knocked from the side which left a hole and there was some damage inside the house.
What was first thought to be a piranha found on a troutline in the upper Colorado River in early June has turned out to be a harmless plant-eating fish. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department inland fisheries biologist Rodger McCabe had identified the fish as a 'pacu,' a South American species similar to the piranha but a vegetarian.
Lonnie Judkins of Richland Springs caught a stringer full of catfish out of the Colorado River using shad as bait. The catch was three yellowcats and two channel catfish. Estimated weight of the fish was about 25 lbs.
Plenty of helping hands were available to get the New Rylander Memorial Library ready for its opening. Those assisting Winnie Brown, Librarian, were Irene Martinez, Judy Watson, Connie Hashaw and Rachel Alcorn through the Summer Youth Program of the Manpower Consortium.
