60 Years Ago June 9, 1966

Homer Felts, a newcomer to San Saba, celebrated his 96th birthday May 25 at Eventide Nursing Home where he and his wife are residing. He has between 75 and 100 well-wishers and divided his decorated birthday cake with them.

According to a letter received from the Adams Extract Company, Miss Cheryl Ellis has been selected as one of the top 50 finalists in the Teenage Bakeoff contest for 1966, Mrs. Jack Harkey, homemaking teacher, has announced. The letter stated, 'The judges were quite impressed with your recipe for Coconut Pecan Frosties.' Miss Ellis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ellis of Sloan community.

The town came alive all decked out in the bright, red, white and blue bunting, heralding the coming San Saba Rodeo. Responsible for these bright new beauties––The San Saba Volunteer Fire Department, Don Woodruff, chief. The colorful decorations and the 'Welcome' at the four entrances, give a festive air, and put us in the mood for summertime fun.

Home room teachers presented perfect attendance certificates to a total of 113 students in San Saba High School at the annual Awards Assembly. These students did not miss a day of school all year. One student, Jimmy Byrd, a senior, had not missed a day during all his 12 years of school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Byrd.

50 Years Ago June 10, 1976

Helen Harkey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack M. Harkey, won two medals at the State Special Olympics in Austin. Representing the Janie Clements MH & MR Center in Brownwood, she won a gold medal in the 25 yard dash and a bronze medal in the 50 yard dash.

Los Tejanitos, a special group of youngsters in San Saba who do culture folklore dances, are ready to dance at Bicentennial Festivals. Members of the dance group are Jerry Reyes, Ricky Hernandez, Alex Hernandez, David Martinez, Eugene Huron, Joe Gamboa, Alex Martinez, Gabriel Perez, San Juan Garcia, Aureliano Martinez, Tammy Esquivel, Tina Reyes, Blanca Esquivel, Gloria Cisneroz, Sonia Reyes, Mary Jane Gamboa, Susan Paredez, Roseann Gamboa, Rachel Paredez and Diana Paredez. Their instructors are Mrs. Pat Ynostrosa and Mrs. Olga Davis.

The new home of Harry Shapiro, owner of Harry's Department Store and Fabric Shop, was the scene of a party honoring all of his employees, both past and present. Those currently employed who attended are Inez Sawyer, Ditty Taff, Una Mae Hyatt, Tina Smith, Susie Gage, Kathleen Tripp, Senaida Calderon, Mildred Patterson, Flo Ferguson, Laverne Smith, Lorena Terry, Ann Long, Velma Williams, Dee Dee Stewardson, Ladell Kinney, David Parker, Charlie Henry and Deana Drewry.

Three hides and hoofs are all that is left of three hogs that had evidently been butchered and the remains dumped on Highway 190 west of San Saba just before you get to the San Saba River. Law enforcement officials said there had not been any reports in the county of any missing hogs.
