Down Memory Lane

80 Years Ago May 23, 1946

Mrs. Marshall W. Trussell and niece, Miss Lucille Bondy, with Mrs. Jack B. Sullivan, have returned from Dallas where they spent the weekend and were in attendance at the operatic performance, Rigoletto. The ladies are members of the Chaminade Music Club here.

Mrs. L. P. Powell of San Angelo has been here to visit with her daughter, Mrs. Al P. Groeble and Mr. Groeble at the ranch south of San Saba. Mr. and Mrs. Powell lived in San Saba for a number of years maintaining ranching interests nearby.

Well, we learn that Colony has voted a consolidation of the school with San Saba. This may be all right, but we fail to see the point. When the country activities in church or school disband, it shows the community is on the wane and besides there are so many that can't go very far, owing to transportation, thus deprived of this pleasure.

James Smith, who has been stationed in Canada, arrived home with a discharge and is already busy getting weeds out of the yard . His wife and son have been with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Snyder, at Field Creek.

Chet Garvin, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Garvin, has been honorably discharged from the armed forces recently and has arrived here. Garvin, a graduate of the San Saba high school and who later attended the University of Texas, will assist his father in the farming and livestock business in the county.

40 Years Ago May 22, 1986

Nancy Stuard came down from Veribest to visit her parents, the Oscar Simpsons, and attended the Alumni Banquet with Kitty Cummings. Her children, Melissa and Zane, where with her.

The Richland Springs boys doubles tennis team of Danny Lee and Rogelio Rodriguez competed at the State Class A tennis meet in Austin. The Coyote duo was defeated in the quarterfinal round by Knippa, 6-4, 6-3.

Kenna Boultinghouse, sophomore daughter of K. R. and Jan Boultinghouse of Cherokee, will be the new Armadillo mascot for 1986-87. Miss Boultinghouse was chosen by the S.S.H.S. student body following tryouts. She will be attending camp this summer with the cheerleaders chosen for the next year and is 'real excited about being chosen for this position.'

The Mustard Seed preschool/ Kindergarten held a Muscular Dystrophy Hop-A-Thon. Thirtythree children between the ages of 3-9 hopped for children with neuromuscular diseases and raised over $1,100.00 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The work of art made from steel depicting the Sesquicentennial was donated to the San Saba Chamber of Commerce by Roger Zane McGehee and Stephen Phillips, who created the sign using a cutting torch, welder and grinder. Zane is the son of Roger and Glenda McGehee and Stephen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bo Phillips. The sign will stand outside the chamber office located in the San Saba Courthouse.
