114 Years Ago May 16, 1912

W. L. McNatt was in town. He says the rain and hail ruined his fruit, melon and other crops last week. He says it was the most destructive storm they have had in that section in 27 years. He says he is at work replanting and in a short time he expects to have a good crop.

Jim Warlick has sold the City Cafe to John Calloway. Jim will turn his attention to landscape gardening and fishing and has the best fishing ground on the river.

Marie, the oldest child of J. J. St. Clair, fell into a ditch and was carried by a swift current of water quite a distance and under a 25 foot railroad culvert. She was not injured other than getting wet and badly frightened.

We are pleased to announce that we have now with us Mr. L. McMeese who is a first-class horseshoer and blacksmith. This will put us in much better position to handle your wants and we will be glad for those wanting special shoeing to come and see us. San Saba Manufacturing Co.

H. C. McAtee has moved his pool hall to the room over the San Saba National bank during the erection of his rock building on the west side of the square.

70 Years Ago May 17, 1956

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Taylor accompanied Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Ransom of Houston to Richland Springs to attend the Alumni Banquet.

Again we say congratulations to Dale Myers for winning the mile race at state meet in Austin. Dale is a senior in Rochelle High School and has some very attractive offers of athletic scholarships in Texas colleges.

H. B. Thaxton of Cherokee was awarded the Kiddie Corvette at Duncan-Parks Chevrolet Company following the San Saba County Centennial Parade. The award was the concluding feature of the 1956 Chevrolet Featurama, an educational and entertainment feature presented by the firm.

Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Smith recently received word from their grandson, Charles L. Smith, that he had arrived in Hong Kong, China. Smith entered the service with the U.S. Navy this year and took his basic training at San Diego. He is now assigned as apprentice fireman on the USS Worchester.

Results of a contest to determine who was the oldest mother and who was the youngest mother who entered their store during a period of one week were announced by Harry Timberlake, manager of The Economy Store. Mrs. Addie Warner of Richland Springs was declared to be the oldest mother who registered She listed her age at 86. Youngest mother in the contest was declared to be Mrs. J. L. Barton, age 19, of San Saba.
