100 Years Ago April 29, 1926

Celebrating the annual pecan day County Agent Jas. F. Rosborough escorted a group of pecan men to several orchards near San Saba; and the committee had provided for a banquet to be served in the evening at the Methodist church basement.

Twenty-three young people from the Fairview community chaperoned by Mrs. Crockett and Mrs. Morris went on a chicken roast. They hiked about three miles and stopped at the Gray tank, where the chickens were cooked and everyone enjoyed lots of fun around the bonfire.

In an editorial last week the San Saba Star “started something.” It was suggested that as there was already a West Texas Chamber of Commerce and an East Texas Chamber of Commerce, there should be a “Heart of Texas” Chamber of Commerce. H. F. Schwenker of the Brady Standard rose up and gave a “second.” The motion is now before the people, and we vote “aye.”

Mrs. A. Behrens and daughter, Miss Leonida Behrens, celebrated their birthday at their beautiful country home on Wallace Creek.

San Saba Club entertained with a dance from 10 until 1 in celebration of San Jacinto Day. Several couples were present to enjoy the dancing and music was furnished by the Watson orchestra. Miss Beason of Mexia gave a ballet dance for the entertainment of the guests.

80 Years Ago May 2, 1946

Tom E. Aylor, who owns the historic Sulphur Springs Ranch, located about 25 miles from here and on the Colorado River, stated that the road to this former well-known health resort is being improved, with additional work to be done on the road later.

Mrs. Bill Alston received a message from her brother, W. C. Christmas, that he was now stationed on Guam. W. C. is with the medical corps.

Tedo Christian has bought the ranch house that stood on the Doran ranch, wrecked it and is going to build a house in town as soon as he decides as the where he wishes to build same.

L. C. Ward, former San Saba Mayor, has been appointed San Saba County Chapter Chairman for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, it has been announced by Mrs. Geo. H. Pittman of Dallas, who is the Texas State Representative for the work.

Paul Baker of this city and who has been associated with the local concern for several years, has purchased the San Saba Bakery from Tommy HItchcock who has owned the business for the past several years.
