As seasons change and spring brings chances for renewal, change has taken place at the San Saba Senior Center. Karry Amstead has recently become the new Center Director and is hoping to bring in new ideas to help the senior citizens of San Saba and the surrounding area.
Amstead has lived in San Saba over twenty-two years with her husband Wilburn and all of her children have attended San Saba ISD. “We have been in San Saba since 2004 and have worked with seniors in the past. I enjoy working with seniors and now that I am here at the center, I would love to see it grow.” Amstead said.
While locals may know the Senior Center to be the home of the Meals on Wheels program, there are many different areas in which the center caters to seniors. According to Amstead “the center provides home cooked dine in meals for individuals sixty years and up. There is a suggested donation of three dollars per meal, but we won't turn away any senior who needs a meal.” Amstead went on to say, “We also have different activities throughout the month, we have a community garden and Bingo on Fridays which is our most popular activity.”
When asked what her goal for the Senior Center was, Amstead stated, “I would love to reach out to seniors who might be lonely or just need someone to talk to. I am at the center Monday through Friday from eight to two and am available during all of those times. I would love to help boost the morale of our senior population.”
Amstead stated that the Senior Center is also a great place for volunteers. “We need people to help with daily activities or if anyone has anything they would like to teach or bring to the center, that would be great.” Amstead added, “If anyone would like to teach a class on how to make something or help lead games such as dominos, that would be something our seniors would love.”
The San Saba Senior Center is operated in conjunction with Hill Country Community Action Association. Hill Country’s mission is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable populations in Central Texas by providing opportunities for education, economic independence, and personal growth.
