80 Years Ago April 4, 1946
Pfc. Melvin Davis. U.S. Marines, arrived in San Diego after 28 months in service, 1 1/2 years overseas. He was wounded at Iwo Jima. He called his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Davis, and stated he would be home soon.
Miss Carlene Maas, who is attending Draughon’s Business College, Abilene, is among the high ranking students whose names appear on the honor roll this month.
Last week Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ellis gave a dance at their new home. Hart Dunnahoo and Benton Miller were the musicians and they are good one, as many can testify.
The Van Cleave Butane Gas Co. has moved their business from the former location to the building next door to the Park Chevrolet Co., formerly occupied by the Walker Electric Shop.
Well, Jim Hillin and wife were visiting the Gimlets. Jim runs a lumber yard in Lometa and he is an ex-county commissioner of this county. Jim is almost too free hearted to succeed in business as he thinks everybody is honest and lets his goods out and the other fellow forgets where he got it, but he still holds on and is making good.
40 Years Ago April 3, 1986
First catch of the year that has been brought into the News office was by Edgar, Eddie and Justin Sanderson. The Sandersons caught the 26 lb. yellowcat in the San Saba River on a throwline baited with perch.
Work has begun on the San Saba Water Project which will allow an added 500,000 gallon storage capacity to the City as well as increased water pressure to persons located in higher areas of the city who at present experience very low pressure.
The San Saba School System is always looking for better ways to help the students learn more and Mrs. Lisa Schulze informed her classes that scientific evidence had shown students learn more when an increase of blood is suppled to their brains, and showed them a new way to sit to achieve this desired effect. After letting the class settle into their “new seating arrangement,” Mrs. Schulze informed the students that it was really an April Fools joke.
The City National Bank, in their 103rd year in the same location, will be moving to their new facilities at 209 E. Brown April 4-5.
On downtown San Saba streets, many businesses sought the talent of Archie Dean Lindsey to construct redwood flower boxes attached to poles that once held parking meters. Mr. Lindsey first placed the flower boxes in front of Lindsey Electric in downtown San Saba. Flowers from petunias to periwinkle to geraniums grace the boxes located throughout the city.
