70 Years Ago March 15, 1956

Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander is taking a few days of her vacation from the City National Bank where she is employed, while her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Jones and sons, of National City, Calif., are visiting with her and her son, Billy.

The Corral Drive-In Theatre south of San Saba will have its reopening March 22, according to manager Abe Willis. The feature for the reopening night will be a western in technicolor, “Tumbleweed,” starring Audie Murphy, Lori Nelson and Chill Wills.

SP-3c Orval C. Perry is serving with the U.S. armed forces in Europe, assigned with a Military Police unit in Germany. He has served about one year of a 3-year overseas assignment, and has about four years remaining of a 6-year enlistment. Perry, who owns a place near Bend, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Buck Perry of Bend.

Earl and Gilbert Webb, brothers who have announced plans for putting in a radio station at San Saba, met with members of the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce to answer questions concerning their project. Under questioning they stated that San Saba definitely would get a radio station in operation hopefully by May 1.

The finished touches to the highway entrance to Mill Pond Park were completed recently when a steel archway bearing the park name was erected. The archway is supported by two masonry pillars built of native stone. The gateway was a project of the San Saba Lions Club.

20 Years Ago March 16, 2006

Late Thursday evening, San Saba’s main water line broke, leaving residents without clean, drinking water. Saturday morning, the people of San Saba were still without potable water. This sent residents flocking to Super S to purchase drinking water. George Heranda, Store Manager of San Saba’s Super S, informed the Super S headquarters about the plight of the folks in San Saba.. Directors at the headquarters agreed to send a truck-load of drinking water to distribute to anyone in need.

On February 22, Joe Beal, LCRA General Manager, threw out the Ceremonial First Pitch at the Armadillo High School Baseball Field, to celebrate the first game played under the new field lights. LCRA’s Transmission crews assisted the city and the school district by installing the new lights. San Saba’s Varsity and JV teams won their games that night against Johnson City.

At the San Saba Chamber of Commerce Banquet Sonic was named Outstanding Business of the Year. Marcia Dyer, Chamber Vice President presented the 2005 award to Deborah and Gary Kinslow, owners, Lucas Hernandez, San Saba Sonic Manager and Javier Paniagua, Supervisor from Brady. San Saba’s Sonic opened September 8, 2004. The Kinslow’s and all their employees are very proud of their community involvement and support.

The 6th Grade Junior Lady Dillos ended their basketball year with two first place wins in the Zephyr Tournament and the Richland Springs Tournament. The girls team members are Kristin Jordan, Marisela Zapata, Ashley Pulatie, Jessica Turner, Samantha Henry, Paige Faught, Courtney Pryor, Bianca Dawson, and Brenda Ramirez. Robert Pulatie, has been coaching these girls since the third grade.
