Down Memory Lane

60 Years Ago March 17, 1966

Charles Riggs, grandson of Mrs. A. J. House of Hall community, rates in the upper five percent of his class at Sul Ross State College, Alpine. A sophomore, he had a grade average of 3.6. He is the son of Mrs. Sophia House Riggs of Sanderson.

Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Stewart left for New York where they will attend the Metropolitan Opera in which their son, Thomas Stewart, will appear as Wolfram in Tannhauser.

Anita Conley of Llano spent a while with Mrs. Mary Smith. Mrs. Will Conley took her shopping in San Saba for her 10th birthday. Mrs. Wilbur Conley and Allen Dale came for her on the weekend.

The dance for the young people of the community, sponsored by San Saba Firemen was deemed a successful venture, according to Fire Chief Don Woodruff. Approximately 250 persons attended the dance and all seemed to enjoy the event, Woodruff said. The Satisfaction, a local band composed of Bobby Rich, Mark Scott, Jim Oldham and Kenneth Smith, furnished the music.

Radow Keeney ran the 440yard dash in 51.3 seconds in the Brady Relays to take the first place and a trophy. Keeney’s time is among the top records in the State AA classification.

40 Years Ago March 13, 1986

Rita Kerr, a well known Texas author spoke to San Saba Elementary students. SSISD Administrative Asst., Jim DeWitt presented a box of pecans Mrs. Kerr as a gift of appreciation from the school. Mrs. Kerr has written several children’s stories including “Girl Of The Alamo,” “Juan Seguin, A Hero of Texas History,” and “The Immortal Thirty-Two.”

San Saba Cub Scouts Ramon Moreno, Donny Smith, and Gabriel Hernandez attended and participated in the Scout-O-Rama held in Brownwood. The Aesop Fable “The Tortoise & The Hair” was the theme of the San Saba Pack’s booth. The Cub Scouts cut turtles and rabbits from plywood and sanded and decorated them during pack meetings for use in the Scout-O-Rama booth. The public participated in the race and received participation badges. The pace received a first place ribbon for Award, Merit and Honor.

The San Saba Armadillo baseball team fell to the Lampasas Badgers 13-6 in San Saba. A sizeable hometown crowd attended the game to support the Dillos. Robert Pulatie led the Dillos’ squad in hitting, going 2 for 4, with a double, and 3 RBI’s.

Rebecca Grusendorf, daughter of Bill and Pat Grusendorf of San Saba, recently played the starring role of Fanny in the University of Texas Opera Theatre production Fanny.

Little Miss Kimberly Sorrells had her 4th birthday celebration, March 8. She is the daughter of Delinda and Kinley Sorrells of Comanche. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Godrey Stuart, were there to help her celebrate.
