Maybe green ribbons with bows displayed around the central Texas area or even in our small town have caught your eye sometime from last July, to even most recently, in our beautiful own Mill Pond Park! If so, thanks for noticing! In a humble manner of symbolizing remembrance, solidarity, and support for those affected by the tragic floods last summer, San Saba Garden Club members wrapped the trees in the yard around the historic building that is actually only a shell at this time (but better days are coming!). Chris Stewart and the parks department added flickering green lights along the walkway, and the flower cart. Our clubhouse was surrounded in green holiday decoration after Dianna Furlan had the commemorative sign made. And thanks to Marjean Alexander for making the bows! To our club membership, the green symbolizes nature and growth for the renewing that comes forth each spring, a time for preparation and planting! It was also the color of Camp Mystic in Kerrville, Texas where many there and downstream on the Blanco River lost their lives. We SSGC members embrace the idea of the ribbons displayed to promote our Garden Club Creed: I believe in my community, I believe in her people, boys and girls, I will endeavor to make this a more beautiful place in which to live.
I believe in trees and grass instead of ash heaps and tin cans, Flowers instead of weeds!
As cleanup from the flood devastation continues to this day, and we continue to see workers in our San Saba River area gathering debris and rebuilding homes and structures, San Saba Garden Club stands alongside the citizens of our community, “Stronger than the Flood” and ready to move forward! We appreciate all the love and support from the community and friends even far away!
