Down Memory Lane

110 Years Ago January 13, 1916

John Edwards, David Smalensks, Ab Walters, Jr., Houston Hunter and Butler Evans spent last week at the Edwards ranch hunting and otherwise have a good time. They report a pleasant week and lots of game.

Frank Thomas and family arrived last week from Fredericksburg and are now domiciled in their new home which they bought from G. D. Heath. Mr. Heath and family have moved to the R. L. Seiders residence.

The following parties motored to Chappel Saturday night to a party at Mr. Jim Alexanders in honor of Miss Estelle Mc-Coury: Messrs. Roy D. Baxter, Luther Baxter, Brady Morris; Misses Neta Moore, Rose Broyles, all expressing themselves as having a delightful time.

W. T. Moore this week sold his interest in the grocery business of Hill Bros. & Moore to Joe and Bud Hill, who will continue the business under the firm name of Hill Brothers. This firm embarked in the grocery business here a year ago, and since that time have enjoyed a nice trade in their line.

Many are the remarks we hear concerning the mildness of this winter. It has been almost summer weather ever since Xmas. Contrast the present January with the one a year ago. A year ago we had two snows, both light as regards San Saba county but heavy to the sough seventy five or one hundred miles. Look out for winter in February and March.

70 Years Ago January 12, 1956

Special attention is to be given in the future toward enforcing the city ordinance requiring motorists to pull over to the side of the road and stop during a fire alarm, and prohibiting the public from following fire trucks to the scene of a fire in such a manner as will hinder or endanger other firemen who are attempting to reach the scene of the fire in their private vehicles.

Hulon Dunnahoo, who has been in the watch repair business with his shop at the Quality Shoppe for several years, has accepted a job as watch repairman at Malone’s in Brady.

Mrs. Ella Gage, celebrated her 83rd birthday in the home of her sister, Mrs. Frances Bogard, in the China Creek community. Others who attended the birthday party were her sister, Mrs. Essie Gage Hubbert; three of her daughters, Mmes. Joe Wild, Ervin Keeney and Edgar Low; and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bogard of China Creek.

San Saba welcomes Mr. and Mrs. Osmund (Tad) Whitsel, natives of Chadron, Nebr. They live on the T. D. Randle farm four miles east of town. “Everybody is nice and friendly here,” said Mrs. Whitsel. Whitsel, a real Yankee cowhand, came here to accpt employment with Owen Brothers.

Baby of 1956, you have a long way to go, if you string along with San Saba for its second 100 years! Centennial Baby was Dustyn Wayne Benson, who trailed the New Year in by one hour and twenty minutes. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred L. Benson, now of Lometa, lately of Fort Worth.
