Commemorative Flag Journey

Stops in San Saba to remember one of San Saba’s Citizens

Great- grandchildren and Community members came together today to fly the Texas Flag over a long ago citizen, businessman and friend to many here in San Saba to celebrate what would have been his 206th Birthday born December 7, 1819 Sion Record Bostick.

Mr. Bostick arrived in 1829 from Montgomery, Alabama to San Felipe, Tejas, Mexico what is now Texas with his parents and other family members, he was 10 years old. The Bostick family was part of Stephen F. Austin’s Old Three Hundred. In those days a boy had to grow up fast especially when your father dies when you are only 13 years old. You grew quickly when you had mentors such as Stephen F. Austin, Willian B. Travis, James Bowie, Edward Burleson, “Deaf” Smith and other strong men and women.

Sion Record Bostick known locally as the “Old Veteran” became a Soldier of the Republic of Texas at the age of 15. He was at the Come and Take It Battle, Mission Concepcion Battle, Siege of Bejar, Battle of San Jacinto where he helped Captured Santa Anna at the age of only 16. Part of the major Indian War of Plum Creek, served in the Mexican / American War and the Civil War. He was not just a soldier but Texas Ranger and Indian Fighter he was a Farmer, Rancher, Wagoner, Fright Haller and Hotelier.

The Old Veteran still managed to have two marriages, 8 children and a totaled of 57 Grandchildren. Thanks to the years of efforts from the San Saba Historical Society in 1973 a Historical Marker was placed to honor Sion R. Bostick at the San Saba Cemetery.

The San Saba County Historical Museum will also be honoring him.

The Museum will have a featured speaker to talk about Mr. Bostick the “Old Veteran” and some of his adventurers at their annual “Night at The Museum” and help you celebrate the 190th Anniversary of Texas Independence along with live demonstrations, other speakers, campfire cooking, and more. Come join them Saturday March 7, 2026.

NOTE: Along with the Texas Flag the San Jacinto Flag was also flown
