It was a busy start to the coming week. The news flash of the week is that the Coyotes are heading to the AT&T stadium, better known as Jerry’s World. We will be playing for the state championship. We were evenly matched for the Strawn game as far as wins were concerned, but our boys came to play and the results proved it. So, our win loss record with Strawn now reads Richland 5, Strawn 4. There is an electromagnetic aura around the school and in the community. The game is Wednesday at 2:00 PM, so, come out and support our Coyotes.
The second big event was the UIL Academic contest that took place on Tuesday and Friday. We usually do well because our kids are terrific. We rarely take the first-place school award, we don’t have enough students. The event on Friday was different. Music memory, chess, and several other contests proved to be the categories to win. I’m proud to say we took first place on Friday. Congratulations to everyone who helped the kids get ready.
Thursday, the Richland Springs Preservation Committee met with the new railroad officials outside the bank building. The railroad is working to form bonds with local businesses. We were the recipients of a $2500 donation to our project. That means two more windows can be restored. Our thanks and appreciation are extended to Omnitrax for investing in our community. We are always grateful for any donations that are given for the restoration of our beautiful old bank building.
The Youth Fair of San Saba County takes place this week. Entries are due on Wednesday. Usually, this event is coupled with the Stock Show, but our last County Agent scheduled the event for an earlier date. Since no new agent has been hired, it hasn’t changed. The government shutdown didn’t leave much time for planning or changing dates.
The Junior class held a chili luncheon on Sunday. I love seeing those happy faces serving the community. They also held a silent auction for some delicious looking desserts. The crowd seemed a little sparse. I hope they did well.
The luncheon was followed by the annual Christian Church “Start the Season” musical. Mary Kate Adams began this tradition many years ago. The church continues to celebrate in memory of Mary Kate and in honoring the birth of our Savior. The mike is open to anyone who wants to read a story, sing a song or share a memory. It may not be Carnegie Hall artists, but it is the sweet sound of community and Christmas. I hope more people will attend next year and start the season off on the right foot. Maxine Robbins proved to us that you can still sing and praise the Lord at 89. She brought all her sparkle with her. Otto Sonomeyer read a commemorative piece to honor Pearl Harbor Day.
For all you cowboys out there, Jasper Farris placed second at the Junior Roughstock World Finals in the novice bareback event. Congratulations to Jasper.”Ride’em” cowboy.
The end of the six-week grading period is the 18th, we have DMAC testing that week and the big game. I’m not sure how that will all be accomplished. My mind tells me there may be some schedule changes. I suspect there will be many students absent on the 17th. After all, state games don’t happen every year. Mr. Roesler will be letting us now sometime this week, I’m sure. These grades are semester grades so please take time to study.
The quilting ladies had their Christmas party and gift exchange on Tuesday. Seeing what saintly serious ladies we are, I’m sure you would be shocked at how animated we become when it comes time to the Chinese gift exchange. I don’t mind taking someone’s gift right off their lap, and I don’t feel any guilt. We do have fun with one another. I can’t begin to tell you what a loving group of sister these ladies are. Everyone is welcome to join the ladies every Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 5:30 PM.
The 1910 Shoppe will be closed until the roof and ceiling repairs are completed. A lady from Alabama purchased most of the merchandise. The remaining items will be put in Chrissy’s Plants. Once the repairs are completed, the original purpose for the 1910 room will be opened for community events.
We are saddened to hear of the passing of Glenn Burleson, Carol Bryant’s father. A meal was held at the First Baptist Church so that family members could visit and share memories. Following the meal, a graveside service was held. We’ve had several funerals in the last month. Please be mindful of the sadness this brings to the Christmas season.
Our nation needs prayer, our government, our world, and our law enforcement officers that will be away from home during the holidays. Most of all pray for our precious troops and their families. Have a blest week.
