110 Years Ago December 2, 1915
S. L. Kirk, the “Nuf sed” tailor, embarked in a new business when he bought a one half interest of J. E. Odiorne in the five year lease of W. J. Moore 10,000 acre ranch east of town and 1500 head of cattle. Kirk is an industrious rustling young man and is sure of success. He is the son in law of G. W. Gray, one of the leading ranchmen of the county.
J. B. Wood and Miss Annie St. Clair were married while seated in their buggy in front of Rev. Chapman officiating. They left on the train for a visit with relatives in San Antonio and San Marcos.
Miss Ruby Jones entertained a few friends at her home in honor of her natal day. Forty-two was the chief diversion and a most pleasant time was spent. Refreshments consisting of sandwiches, coffee and cake wee served to the following guests, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stovall, Misses Clarice Warlick, Eva Watkins, Willie Moore, Ruby Jones and Messrs. Tom Watkins and Perry Sewell.
A number of younger set enjoyed an all day picnic Thanksgiving at Eagle Bluff near Fleming Springs. A tempting and delicious lunch was served and a thoroughly good time was spent. The high north wind was forgotten as the merry crowd gathered round the huge bon fire and listened to stories of other thanksgiving days. Those enjoying the outing were Misses Lillie and Bob Carter, Wilma, Mary and Gertrude Quinn, Justine Keeling, Mary Evans, Vera Dean and Matha Maas. Messrs. Garland Hill, Joed Walker, Willie Wilson, Cecil Smith, Reuben Ashley, Julian Evans and Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Quinn.
50 Years Ago December 4, 1955
San Saba’s only radio station with satellites in Llano and Goldthwaite came under new management officially and is presently owned by Hill County Broadcasting Inc. KBAL, 1410 on your radio dial, is now under the General Management of Troy Hall and plans are being made to update equipment and expand news coverage and service to the area.
San Saba Varsity Boys Basketball Team turned the tables on Lampasas in a game played at Lampasas. The Dillos avenged an earlier defeat by beating the Badgers 62-56. Wesley Hardman had his best night scoring 22 points and gathering in 25 rebounds. Louis Cisneroz contributed 14 points, Steve Martin 12, Mike Miles 10 and John Reavis 4.
Martha Leigh Miller, complete with crown, flowers, trophy and robe, posed with her duchesses after being named the new San Saba Pecan Queen for 1975-76. First runner-up is Miss Kim Schoenbacher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Schoenbacher. Second runnerup is Miss Jayne Lindsey, daughter of Mrs. Marjorie Rider and Morris Lindsey. Miss Miller is the daughter of Judge and Mrs. Jack Miller.
Don’t try to find anybody in Cherokee Saturday night. With the exception of just a few the vast majority will be in Brownwood for another spectacular and now almost traditional football game between the Cherokee Indians and the Marathon Mustangs. Even the Cherokee Steak House had to close. According to the Zulaufs, “all of our employees have asked off for the night.” Not too long later it was official. “We’re closing so all can go to the game.”
