The Golden Armadillo Band wrapped up a remarkable marching season this past Saturday at the Area D Marching Contest in Academy. From their first performance to their final note, the band demonstrated tremendous growth, dedication, and resilience in the face of challenges both musical and environmental.
The season began at the Hill Country Marching Festival, where the band earned an impressive 5th place finish, setting the tone for the season ahead. They continued their competitive streak at the Harry Bradberry Marching Classic in Dublin, finishing 6th overall and earning the title of Outstanding Drum Majors of the Day.
Building on that momentum, the Golden Armadillo Band delivered one of its strongest performances of the season at the Concho Classic Marching Contest in San Angelo, where they proudly brought home 3rd place overall. Their hard work culminated in a superior showing at the UIL Region Contest in Burnet, where they earned a First Division rating, qualifying them for the UIL Area Marching Contest.
At the Area contest, the band had one of their best performances of the year, placing 7th in preliminaries and earning the title of Area Finalist. Unfortunately, the finals round was cancelled due to inclement weather, bringing the season to an early close. Heavy rain caused a four-hour delay, pushing preliminary performances late into the evening. By the time the last band performed—after 10:00 p.m.—UIL rules required the contest to conclude by midnight, forcing the preliminary results to stand as final.
Despite the disappointing end, the band members and directors reflected on a season defined not by trophies, but by transformation. “The amount of improvement and growth these students have shown is incredible,” Mr. Moellendorf said. “We had many ups and downs throughout the season, but our students persevered and gave their best performance of the year at Area and we are extremely proud of their results.” There were 18 bands at the Area Marching Contest and despite competing early in the day (4th), their performance was strong enough to make the top seven.
Through long rehearsals, late nights, and unexpected weather delays, the Golden Armadillo Band proved that their strength lies not just in their sound, but in their spirit. As this season closes, one thing is certain—the Golden Armadillos have marched their way into success and set the bar even higher for next year.
The Golden Armadillo Band would like to thank all of our volunteers for their hard work in building props, moving equipment and chaperoning our students this competitive season. The Golden Armadillo Band could not have had the success that we had if it weren't for our community sponsors.
