Central Texas SCV Camps gather for Leadership Development

GATESVILLE, TX - On Saturday, August 16th, the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) 7th Brigade hosted an informative Leadership Training Seminar for commanders and adjutants at the Texas Station Event Center in Gatesville. Forty-four representatives from 10 SCV camps attended the event: General Felix H Robertson Camp No. 129 *(Waco), Hiram B Granbury Camp No. 427 (Granbury), Captain June Kimble Camp No. 488 (Eastland), Williamson County Grays Camp No. 502 (Georgetown), General John Creed Moore Camp No. 578 (Gatesville), 2nd Texas Frontier Camp No. #1904 (Deleon), Terry’s Texas Rangers Camp No. 1937 (Cleburne), Capt. Walter T. Saxton Camp No. 1982 (Hico), General Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp No. 2313 (Whitney), and Saltworks Camp No. 2353 (Lampasas).

Attendees were energized by interactive training sessions led by top SCV officials: Texas Division Commander in Chief Shelby Little, Chief of Staff Bill Elliot, Army of Trans-Mississippi Commander John McCammon, 7th Texas Brigade Commander D.W. Davis, Texas Division Chaplain James Bozeman and Camp No. 478 Adjutant Michael Broussard. A barbecue lunch was provided by Saltworks Camp of Lampasas, with sides prepared by Commander Davis’s wife.

Looking ahead, Commander Davis will join the Saltworks Camp meeting on Saturday, August 23rd, at Little Tex Restaurant, 505 South Main Street, Copperas Cove, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The agenda features plans for upcoming community events, including the Dove Parade in Hamilton on August 30th, the Oatmeal Parade and Festival in Bertram on September 27th, artillery school for the “Judge” cannon crew October 3rd–5th near San Angelo, and the highly anticipated Central Texas SCV Muster & Black Powder Competition Shoot in San Saba October 17th–18th.

An update will also be shared regarding the joint project with the Marshall Camp—a new Texas Historical Subject Marker about the “Knights of The Golden Circle.” The marker application was submitted to the Texas Historical Commission in 2024. Both camps have already raised the funds needed for the cost of the marker.

The Saltworks Camp continues to expand its outreach, and will deliver programs to SCV camps in Carthage, Anderson, San Antonio, and Fort Worth, as well as previous events in Marshall and San Marcos.
