Too Much, Too Fast
First, I want to apologize for my absence lately. I simply could not find anything to say in light of all that has been happening here in our community and in neighboring communities for the past few weeks. A friend called a couple of weeks ago to check in and discuss damage to his place and ours—he said “You know we spend years praying for rain then when it shows up, it’s too much too fast.” I believe that has been a common conversation around the Hill Country in the past few weeks.
It seems to be a part of human nature to focus on the negative. There are some people who are naturally optimistic, who see the good in nearly everyone and everything, but it seems that most of us tend to settle into a more pessimistic outlook if we do not consciously seek to do otherwise. Tragic events like those we have experienced do tend to bring out people’s true colors, and what I have seen is ratcheting up my optimism levels. The overwhelming response has been kindness and compassion, not only here, but around the world. The kindness has been poured out like the rain, so much, so fast. What a problem to have—not being able to process and dispatch the donations and helpers fast enough.
As I have said many times before, we have such a nice community here in San Saba County. Of course there are always people who will complain, and of course there are problems, but overall, we have it very, very good here. It is friendly, peaceful, and really, really convenient in so many ways. We have so many good people here who help each other in any way they can, who are so generous with their time and resources.
For those in the path of the floods—you are being prayed over across this country and even around the world. I hope you can feel the love and I hope it strengthens you, gives you comfort, and lifts you up.
